Counter Strike 1.6

I just installed Windows 7 today and I love it except for this 1 problem. When I run counter strike it runs in software mode. I want to run the game in openGL. I have an ATI Sapphire x1650 pro and I use to run the game with constant 100fps. When I change it to openGL it won't let me and it says it doesnt support the specified video. If anyone knows how to solve this problem Answer back!!!

I have the exact same problem and I use a Radeon X1950 PRO, I have not yet been able to find a solution to this problem. I've tried using the windows XP SP 2 compability mode without any success. I've also tried using D3D and I end up by being given the same error message. If anyone has been able to solve this issue, please post it!

As far as I know, opengl does not work in vista or 7 ( might be wrong) but tbh, software mode should work fine, just make sure you have the latest drivers installed. I get a constant 100 fps with software mode.

In my case, playng urban terror 4.1 (opengl too), i disabled the desktop composition and it makes the game runs fine. But not so cool yet.

Im looking for a better solution...

Well, I don't know a solution for ATI's but I know one for Nvidia:

Credits goes to ambientmf.

It requires using RivaTuner.
You can download RivaTuner here.
Note: I'm a nvidia user so I'm not too sure if this can extend to integrated graphics users and/or ATI.

Go to OpenGL Settings under Driver Settings in the Main Rivatuner window.
Under the Back / depth buffering tab, change the Back buffer flipping mode from "Auto select" to "Block transfer".

Hey I just updated the Catalyst drivers (updated 28/08 2009) Which must have been like just a few days after I made my post. Works totally fine now! There is the solution for everyone who might be having the same problem!

Guys I dont think the problem will ever go away from yall.
Ati Has discontinued support on those cards as well as my x550.
They are now legacy hardware according to ATI.

Better than what I've got

My CS 1.6 won't run. When I start it, it brings up the main CS screen with the 2 guys and no text. Also, the task bar is showing.

I have the 8.593.100.0 drivers for my Radeon 9550 without the CCC installed.

I also have tried putting -autoconfig into boot options, and still no luck.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I am using the legacy drivers. Are these drivers even meant for gaming or do they just allow you to use high res and Aero? Also, CSS runs, but has black border on top and right sides(also runs like crap).
