Lord of the Rings Online poor performance. Hello all,
I've spent the last few days searching the web for ways to fix this, and have tried a lot of the suggestions posted here for people having similar symptoms with Windows 7 in various programs.
I recently reinstalled Lord of the Rings Online after having not played it for some time. Before I ran it under Windows XP without any real issues, on the exact same system. The problem I am having now is the game hitches / pauses as if I were pressing the screenshot button. It is most noticeable in high traffic areas or when large groups of players are fighting. However it also happens in open areas with nobody else around, and even happens in a small one room zone with just one NPC for a quest in it.
I've done everything I can think of up to this point: updated graphics drivers, motherboard drivers, sound drivers, network card drivers. I switched all the graphics settings to low or disabled and it still happened. I disabled page files to force the system to run on physical memory alone. I disabled the sound card and tried playing with no sound. I disconnected my computer from our router and plugged it directly into the cable modem. I ran a disk defrag as well as a defrag utility the game makers put out.
After all that I even flashed the motherboard BIOS to the current version from MSI. It actually seems a lot worse since doing that. I will approach an area where a lot of players are fighting and the frame rate completely drops, quickly going below 1 FPS even. While this happens I still hear the background music normally as well as combat sound effects, although those come vary spaced out. The first time this happened I hit a skill to transport me out of the area, and proceeded to watch for 10 minutes while nothing happened, aside from the screen changing a frame every 30-60 seconds or so. It wouldn't jump ahead when it updated, as though catching up to what's really happening, but it would just advance frame by frame through what you would be normally seeing only at a much much faster rate. The mouse cursor moves as smooth as ever during all this, and the chat window continues to scroll from time to time but I can't activate it to type anything. Code: ------------------

Defragmenting may help some with hitching.
Beyond that, it almost sounds like a server lag issue.
Does it always do this regardless of the time of day?

I ran disk defrag as well as a defrag utility for the game files from the producer.
It happens at any time of day when there's more than a few players around fighting, with lots of effects. This is when it's most pronounced, but there's small hitches whenever, even standing still doing nothing sometimes.
It's quite different from when there is lag. The game has a built in feature that reduces your awareness of your surroundings to help with server lag when there's a lot of players in one area. An icon pops up so you know, and I think it reduces the draw-in range for players / NPCs. Also when there's lag in the connection, I'll see players running in place, or be unable to move, but can spin around in one spot and the game responds normally otherwise. It's nothing like what I'm experiencing.
Just now I got jumped by 7 or 8 players at once and all the effects going off made the game hang up and I came out of it quite dead. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number I built it. Is it just this game you have issues with?
I see you have tried EVE & AO without issue but do graphic intesive games play fine?
Did you update your DirectX files?
From your specs, you have a quite decent gaming rig. No doubt more than capable for LOTRO.
If everything else runs fine, I would certainly think its centered around LOTRO somehow, and not your machine.
This almost sounds like a connection issue although may not be.
A couple other thoughts:
1) I do recall some having alot or performance issues with LOTRO under DX10.
Perhaps try running in DX9 and see if it helps.
Although I must admit, it has been quite some time since a played the game, well over a year. So this very well may have been resolved.
It may be worth trying at any count.
2) Did they not recently upgrade to a limited free to play system? I haven't checked on it lately or know if its live yet but ..
Im wondering if perhaps the implementation has broken something for some people. Or causing alot more server strain ... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom (Self Build) OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel Core i7 2700k Motherboard eVGA P67 SLI Memory 8GB Mushkin Redline Ridgebacks @1866 Graphics Card EVGA GTX570 SC Sound Card XiFi Titanium HD Monitor(s) Displays LG W2453V Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Saitek Cyborg PSU Seasonic x750 Case Corsair 600T SE White Cooling eVGA Superclocked CPU Cooler Hard Drives Intel 320 80GB -- Intel X25-V 40GB --WD Black 1TB x2 -- WD Blue 640GB Antivirus Kaspersky Browser IE Other Info LG BD/DVD |

Thanks for the ideas. I have tried both DX 10 and DX 9 modes, it looks better in DX 10 but the pauses are still there.
You're correct the free to play model is coming, but not yet. It's starting this coming week starting Wednesday or so I think.
As far as other games, I haven't had the urge to play anything else in a while. When I was still running XP I played through Mass Effect 2, Borderlands for example with no issues and good gameplay on pretty high settings.
Edit: Well seems its prime time again and there are a huge number of players in the pvp area. I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled the latest graphics drivers from NVIDIA and then did the steps "How-to's": "Voice Chat" - "Improving Video Hitching, Glitching.." - The Lord of the Rings Online™ Forums here to reset the graphics configuration in game, afterwards setting everything back to low.
The game doesn't become nearly unresponsive around large groups fighting now like before, but it is still basically unplayable and I can barely run around.

Well, I don't want to be preemptive but I just changed a two small things and seem to have noticed a drastic drastic improvement. I was able to actually move around and fight in a huge fight.
Here's what I did:
- Created a profile for Lord of the Rings in the NVIDIA control panel. There wasn't one before. Left all the settings set to the global settings except for one: Power management mode, I switched from Adaptive to Performance.
I just went to double check the setting in the control panel, however, and the profile is gone again. So this probably didn't have anything to do with it.
The other thing I did was go into the Lotro program folder and change all of these to run as Administrator and in XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode:
TurbineLauncher
TurbineElevator
TurbineInvoker
Lotroclient
I'll update if this continues to work or if the problems return. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number I built it. Ok, after running around a bit more and getting in some big keep fights, it is still happening occasionally. However, it's not always happening like before.
Changing it to run in compatibility mode for XP SP2 makes me really think there's some kind of driver issue making the engine hang when certain effects or something are happening within draw radius of my character.
It's a lot better now at least. Does anyone have any other ideas of things to try? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number I built it. Been a while since I posted here but just wanted to share something I discovered recently. Apparently there was a problem with earlier Phenom processors and a patch was developed by Microsoft that can have the side effect of lowering performance, significantly in gaming. From what I have read, despite the problem being fixed in newer Phenom versions, Windows will still enable the patch if it detects any Phenom in your rig.
There is a program to disable the patch. Some users have reported performance increases even in Windows 7 with newer Phenom models. Others notice no change. For me, I stumbled upon this when I picked up Dragon Age: Origins and it ran horribly enough that I basically considered it unplayable. After an hour or so, it would take well over 5 minutes to load a new zone, even if it was just a small one room tavern. This small program made a huge difference.
If anyone out there has a Phenom processor this article is worth a read even if you don't have any issues. Helping Hand? Vista Service Pack 1 vs. Your Phenom - Hardware Canucks
The article is geared towards Vista but if you do a quick search for "Phenom TLB" you'll find forum discussions where Windows 7 users have seen improvements as well. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number I built it.
