Windows 7: Z Engine on Win 7 x64

This seems like an active Win 7 gaming site, so . . .

I downloaded and installed the 64-bit zengine file from Ideazon/Steel series. The install appeared to go smoothly, but when it completed and the app tried to run, all I got was a rapidly appearing and disappearing window in the upper left of my screen saying "Please Wait . . . Compacting Database." I cannot end the process via Task Manager; only a forced reboot works.



My googling has turned up mostly Microsoft Access (database) hits, which puzzles me even more.

Has anybody experienced this?

Best thing to try first - Install/Run as Admin by right-clicking on the app.

Yes. It's generally a good idea although I'm not certain of the 'official' recommendations, I do as a rule of thumb. Especially for drivers!

To get my zengine to work I let the Microsoft update install it first. It works perfect. After that you can install the one from their website.

So you plugged it into the computer and then went to Windows Update which was offering a driver? I can give that a try, but it is the Z-Engine app that is my problem.

Installing it as admin didn't make any difference . .

FWIW, the device (Fang) is properly detected by the OS and I can "type" with it. It is the Z-Engine app that doesn't work. I have sent an email to Ideazon/SteelSeries.

Are you using the 64-bit version of the Z-Engine app?

This is how I did it.

1. Fresh/clean install of Windows 7 x64 with everything plugged in.
2. Turned off all that annoying security crap. i.e.. firewall, etc..
3. Made myself admin.
4. Used Microsoft Update to update everything in the system.
5. Then installed the x64 zEngine software.
6. When I started the zEngine to pick my game it downloaded some new game profiles.
7. Works perfect.

The Logitech 64 bit software for all their pads/wheels works perfect too.

My Win 7 x64 RC install is not "fresh" as I have other apps installed, nor have I turned off the firewall, but it is completely updated. And I ran the zengine executable as admin. At this point, I don't care to take the nuclear option and start with a freshly formatted hard drive and reinstall the OS. I am however building another computer that I was going to use for familiarizing myself with 64-bit Linux, but I will install Win 7 x64 on it forst to try another time with Z Engine.

My problems with Zengine in Windows 7 are a little different, I dont have any issue isntalling both the 32 and 64 bit versions, or starting the Zengine program, but whenever I try to edit a mod's exe trigger, I cant get the window that elts me navigate to the exe I want to add to the trigger list.

In fact, anything that involves the Zengine navigating through folders (actions such as exporting mods, importing mods, editing trigger exes, etc) doesnt work, whenever I click the "..." button, nothing happens.

Im lucky that I still have a saved mod for my games, as double-clicking teh mod file will upload it into teh Zengine manager, but it is still a niusance - has anybody else enountered this problem?

Also, I dont know if it is related, but despite having installed the 64bit version of zengine, it appears on my task manager as zboard.exe *32. Is this normal?

Incidentally I am running RC 7100.
