    MY SOLUTION WORKED FOR ME

I have the Asus P6T SE with HD Audio and Realtek soundcard. COD4 single player works fine, multiplayer started and closed to the desktop.
The problem was solved in two ways.
    1. If you have front panel audio put a mic in the front panel - note mic only.

2.More permanent fix - disable front panel jack detection in the HD Audio Manager - see pic below

    Worked for me!
thank you soo much! i was gettin so annoyed and didnt know what to do because i dont have a mic.

    FOR A MORE PERMAMENT SOLUTION:
Try right clicking on the volume control icon, and click on recording devices.
Right click somwhere in an empty space in the white box and click show disabled devices. Right click on stereo mix and click enable. It worked for me, now cod dosnt need mic to run! (I had previously installed realtek hd drivers though, i dont know if that makes a difference or not)
    I don't have stereo mix

    Can anyone help?

Click on your STart button, then all programs/accessories/System Tools and you will find defrag

But did you try putting a mic in, or read post #23 and disable it if you don't have a mic.

I have always had a mic installed, so never had this problem with Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer.

Weird, I've have the game on both Vista and Windows 7 without any trouble, I don't even use a Mic. Just speakers.

I only use patch 1.6 and 1.6-1.7. Good to know in the future, I suppose I should by a Mic.

it doesnt have to be a mic if you dont have one , an old pair of headphones will fool it into thinking it has a mic :) essentially a mic and headphones are the same thing
