It would help us more if you could specify if you are using a wired or wireless controller?
I'm using and official wired Xbox 360 controller and up to now it works in anything and everything i throw at it. Never had to install anything for it as Windows 7 picked it up the first time and installed it's own native driver's.

Wait, are all the drivers installed? Because it could be a simple driver issue. But if they are what games are you trying to run them on? Cause if they are old games (old as in GTA IV wasn't out for the PC yet) they need regular button programing.
