Games locking up after 3-15 mins? FIXED
I just did a fresh install of RC 7100 (64) on my new system build, and decided to start by testing 4 games: CnC3 - Kane's Wrath, Crysis, HalfLife 2 (+ep 1, 2, and CS:Source), and World of Warcraft.
System Specs:
-Asus Rampage 2 mobo
-i7 920 @ 2.66 on air (overclocking later)
-12gigs Corsair DDR3 1600
-WD Velociraptor 300gig
-BFG GTX295, driver 185.20
I experienced hard system locks that required a reboot after playing Crysis and HL2 for anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes. Additionally, WoW addons were not working properly. For some reason CnC3 worked, but 1 out of 4 games isn't exactly acceptable. After browsing these forums and many others for days, I found a solution.
STEP 1: Create a file called "games" in "C:\Users\Public"
STEP 2: Copy all of your installed games from other locations to this folder.
STEP 3: Right-click on the "Application" files in "C:\Users\Public\Games" for the game you want to play. Click on the "Compatibility" tab. At the bottom, there will be a box titled "Privilage Level." Check the box next to "Run Program as Admiinistrator." Click APPLY. Click OK. Windows will tell you not to run the game in compatibility mode. DO IT ANYWAY. You're not trying to run the program like it's in Vista or XP, so don't mess with that pulldown menu. All you want to do is check to box to run your application as an administrator. Do this one application at a time, one game at a time, for each game you have.
STEP 4: Run your game! (AFTER you have played your game without interruption for several days, feel free to delete the files from the old location.)
I discovered this fix when trying to get my addons for WoW to work. I was also trying to edit a config file in WoW to better utilize my i7 920 when I discovered that I couldn't save the changes. I believe this has something to do with the permission system of Windows 7. I'm not sure if it's the same for Vista or not, but it seems like Windows 7 is extremely picky and cautious with this kind of stuff.
After reading hundreds of posts by other people with the exact same problem as myself, I hope this post finds them.
