Diablo 2 works when run in Windowed Mode

When I try to run D2 in fullscreen I get a UE. However, when I run in windowed mode it runs just fine. Not sure why this is, but it works for me.

If you want to run D2 in windowed mode you have to right click your Diablo 2 shortcut, go to properties, and in the "Target:" field you should see something like

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"

    Just add

    -w

to the end of that (after the quotes and with a space between) so it looks like

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -w

ditto. just looks a little weird, maybe a little crisper. although i am using a higher refresh rate than usual.

It works fine for me in full screen mode at 800x600 with the latest patch, although I mostly only tried Direct3D mode (as opposed to DirectDraw 2D mode). I also got the D2-specific Glide wrapper working via the "disable desktop composition" compatibility setting (which turns off Aero to prevent OpenGL issues).

Try running D2VidTst again. I had the same problem, but running the Video Test solved it. Now, I can run Diablo 2 normally (not windowed, that is) :)

I tested baltzatu's suggestion on my system and it works. Just as he said, I ran the program and it suggested to use Direct3D, which I then selected. After doing so, Diablo2 (LoD) worked perfectly. I have the current patch and I have copied the game-files into the D2 directory, so I can run it without the need of the CD.
    Thanks, baltzatu! :)

    This works for me

Reduce your screen resolution to 1360x768 and run the video test. higher resolutions invoke scaling which the app cannot handle. diablo 2 also runs full screen from this resolution.

I had to set compatibility to XP and disable Desktop composition.
But I had to install 3x before I realized that it's the cinematics what kicks DII/LoD off kilter.
So just use the recommended installation for DII (Single and Multiplayer) ~900kb without cinematics...Hell I've seen them so many times...it doesn't matter to me

Update the patch to the latest version.

I experienced a graphic problem pre 1.13 patch and now it's perfect after I had updated it.

running diablo 2 in windows mode

you dont have to run the game in windows mode if you dont want to, like others said already the open GL is causing errors, a simple fix in task mgr by just ending the windows explorer, running the game game and then CTR+ALT+DEL out and start the app all over again. simple enough for those who dont know how to open properties and doing it the more stable way. also i got my D2 to run in 1400-900 ress, hard to tell what things are at times but very crisp indeed.
