    Just shifted to win 7
I too am facing the same problem on my desktop (everything else including aero is running fine)
xp for me was much faster in games.
    win 7 - 4500 3dmark06
    xp - 5200
in general i am getting 15-20 % slower performance.
got the latest nvidia 196.21 drivers, also updated windows and checked for spyware (found none).
can this be caused by any microsoft update

    Not here:

    Excellent gaming performance in 7

Update your hardware - a Pentium 4 is never going to cut it with 7, and install 4GB of RAM if your chipset can handle it and you have 7 x64.

Hey its not an issue with my processor my single core is inadequate by todays standards i agree but win 7 seems to work perfectly on it.
its only in games that i get bad performance, and i can't believe that any hardware would perform slower in 7 than in xp or vista

Yes, games need dual-core. If I remember, Mass Effect 2 pointed out that single cores are not supported.
