    gta iv save games

    hi all,

I've recently installed win 7 and my problem is locating my GTA 4 saved games in my previous OS (Vista). I know it's located somewhere in the Windows old folder, but I can't find any rockstar games save game folder in users\USERNAME\My documents, or any other folder I've searched. Can somebody please tell me where it's located. I'm very far into GTA 4 and hate to go back to starting a new game. any help appreciated, thanks.

Hi manong30 and welcome to the forums.

GTA 4 saved game is located in:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\user_#

If you are going to back up your game just copy all the "user_#" folder.
After installing the OS and the game:

    1. Sing-in to your account and start a new game.
    2. Skip the intro of the first mission and then exit the game.
    3. Go to the path above and it should be 2 folders the "user_invalid" and "user_#"
    4. Open the "user_#" folder and paste your "SGTA4#" file.

Now launch the game and it should load your previous saved game.
If you don't see the AppData folder in your computer please take a look at this tutorial.

Let me know if you got any mo' question.

It says "Load Failed. Please check your hard drive and try again."

    • Make sure to only paste the save-games into user_# folder, do not replace the whole folder.if that doesn't work try to pass the first mission 'til auto-saves, then exit the game and paste your old save-games.
    • Also make sure to use the same profile u used when u saved the game.

    # refers to a serial different to every user.

You also need the content of the xlive folder, which in XP is located in (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\XLive). Don't know about vista location.

That folder contains all the games titles you have with windows live.

No save games with windows live will work without it.

EDIT: If you don't have any other windows live games in w7 except gta4, delete the xlive folder from w7 and copy the previous one from vista that includes the gta4 save game. After that it should log-in automatically with the same user-name as before on vista or you'll have to do it manually.

Thanks guys, I've done it! Another problem though. "Out of video memory!", hehe. Seems to come up when I drive too fast and the system can't keep up. My video card is nvidia geforce 9800 1g, 4g RAM, Core 2 Quad system.

getting previous saves can be a PTA, but you got that sorted

It sounds like you have your graphic level/settings set well above 900mb+ to be receiving that error.

Why your game isn't updated??? weird 'cause i thought it will updated by itself anytime you sign-in to your account, anyway here is the latest update if you're playing the game offline.

You can use FRAPS for taking screenshots in games. the free version will do the job, you can find it here. (use the FAQ if you haven't used this program before.)
And here is a tutorial to know how to post a screenshot in Seven Forums by Brink.
