The 5870 will provide a minor performance boost, considering the fact that it's in the same family as the 5770. Go for the 6970. I use a 5770 on a daily basis at home, and use a 6970 at school. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number N/A OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.0 GHz 945 Motherboard ASRock M3A770 Memory 4 GB DDR3 667 MHz Graphics Card ATI 5770 1 GB (XFX) Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays ASUS MS236 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Vanilla Multimedia keyboard Mouse Vanilla "Macally" mouse PSU 500W Case Smilodon by Raidmax Cooling 2 120cm fans, 2 80cm fans Hard Drives 500 GB WD 7200 RPM

Sapphire is more reliable and overall a better company. And - I would actually suggest using the drivers that come with the card/manufacturer. It's the same CCC, but optimized for your specific card. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number N/A OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.0 GHz 945 Motherboard ASRock M3A770 Memory 4 GB DDR3 667 MHz Graphics Card ATI 5770 1 GB (XFX) Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays ASUS MS236 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Vanilla Multimedia keyboard Mouse Vanilla "Macally" mouse PSU 500W Case Smilodon by Raidmax Cooling 2 120cm fans, 2 80cm fans Hard Drives 500 GB WD 7200 RPM

Just as a reference, a 5870 has exactly 2 times the ideal performance of a 5770 spec wise, the 5870 is about 10% faster than a 6870, the 6970 should be 50% better than the 6870.
Edit: Looking at the Poll, why do you want a 5870 Eyefinity 6 edition? Those cost roughly $100 more than the regular Eyefinity 3 editions. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Built/ Built by me, CR-48 OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU INTEL CORE I5 750 180x20 all powersaving 1.168v Motherboard MSI P55-GD55 Memory OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666 (7-7-7-20-2t) @1.651v Graphics Card ASUS 9800GT GLACIATOR FANSINK Sound Card ONBOARD REALTEK ALC889 Monitor(s) Displays VIEWSONIC VX924, VIZIO VS420LF1A Screen Resolution VX924: 1280x1024 75hz, VS420LF1A: 1920x1080 60hz(1080p) Keyboard Logitech K520 Mouse LOGITECH M310 PSU OCZ MODXSTREAM PRO 700 WATT SEMI-MODULAR Case ANTEC 900 Cooling CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ Hard Drives HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 IDK/7K 1TB 7200RPM 32MB CACHE SATA II Internet Speed CHARTER PIPELINE 15MB DOWN/ 3MB UP Other Info ROUTER: DLINK DIR-655, Netgear WNR3500L (SamKnows)

I'd go with Sapphire or MSI, preferably Sapphire.
Visiontek, I've only used their products one or twice. You don't get anything more for the higher price.
NewEgg buyers (myself included), seem to favor Sapphire, MSI, then Visiontek (if you had to rate them). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-built OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit CPU Intel Core i7-3770 Motherboard Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3 Memory G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 F3-10666CL9D-8GBNT Graphics Card Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6670 Sound Card Realtek ALC892 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung SyncMaster P2370HD, Dell 1703FPT Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard Logitech Deluxe 250 Mouse Logitech MX518 PSU SeaSonic M12II SS-500GM Case Lian Li PC-9F Cooling Zalman CNPS9900LED Hard Drives Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ Internet Speed 8 Mbps |

I was going to recommend going NVIDIA here (which is the best move IMO [the GeForce GTX 570 is a f#%cking monster.]).... But... Considering you have an AMD CPU, It wouldn't be smart at all.
Now, between the HD 5870 and HD 6970.... I'd say.... Neither. The best choice?:
Those GPUs can be flashed to HD 6970s quite easily. So, you'll end up getting HD 6970 performance for ~$70 bucks less. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self Built OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 CPU Intel Core i5-2500K Motherboard ASUS P8P67 [UEFI v.1608] Memory 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 @ 1600MHz Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX470 [Tesla's 270.90 WHQL] Sound Card ASUS Xonar DS [UNi Xonar Driver v1.31 Low DPC] Monitor(s) Displays SAMSUNG P2070 Screen Resolution 1600 x 900 @ 60Hz Keyboard Logitech K300 Black Mouse Thermaltake Tt eSPORTS BLACK on Steelseries 4HD Gaming pad PSU Corsair TX950W Case Corsair Obsidian 650D Cooling Thermaltake Frío Hard Drives WD Caviar Blue 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache [on SATA 6Gb/s port] Other Info Headphones: Sennheiser HD-515

Also, if you are a heavy overclocker - the 6970 would be a better option due to the 6+6 pin (6950) vs 6+8 pin of the 6970.
The 6xxx series also scale better in crossfire if that becomes an option in the future.
As for brand - as others have mentioned, Sapphire, ASUS, Gigabyte etc have a better 'reputation'. Although I'd go MSI over Visiontek given the choice.
Basically, all the cards are currently reference at the moment, so go with the one that either bundles extra goodies, or has the best warranty for your location.
The 5870 is quicker @ stock clocks, but the newer features of the 6xxx series trumps this. Plus newer series card will also get more 'priority' driver attention. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Me OS 7 Ultimate x64 CPU i5 2500K 4.7 Ghz Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Gen 3 Memory 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 2133mhz Graphics Card Asus GTX 580 DirectCU II Sound Card X-FI Forte 7.1 + ATH-AD900 Headphones Monitor(s) Displays x2 Dell U2410 / 58" Samsung / "40 Sony Screen Resolution 1920*1200 / 1920*1080 Keyboard Topre Realforce // Ducky Shine MX Black // Filco Ninja TKL Mouse Razer Imperator + Razer Lachesis PSU Corsair AX1200W Case Lian Li PC-V1020A Cooling Noctua NH-D14: 3x140mm Gelid Wing 14 : Noctua NF-P12 120mm Hard Drives 2x Intel 520 240GB * Crucial M4 128GB * 2x Samsung F3 1TB (RAID 0) * 2x WD Caviar Blacks 2TB (RAID 0) Other Info Laptop Specs:
