    Metro 2033 - Critic Review

I installed. Played first mission. Now I have my thoughts.

    GRAPHICS

The biggest talk about this game is graphics. Now I may not have 4 580GTX, 16Gb of RAM and 2 Xenon procesor, my hardware can pull of recent games with minor setting tweaks. While the game IS VERY detailed, it is way overdone. It's dark, gritty and very dirty looking. IMHO it makes it looks terrible. Yes, it's part of the atmosphere but I have a thesis.

Most people often get pretty standard LCD computer screens with alright responsiveness and contrast. This is THE major problem. A cheap LCD screen trying to reproduce all these darks make it hard to have a "smooth" gradient of darks and grays. This is, to what I believe, makes this game really dirty looking and unappealing to the eye. I have an ACER H233H and I will admit is not a fabulous screen (23" LCD costing roughly 200$) but it makes well with bright colors. Blacks are always hard for an LCD screen as each pixel, which contains 3 sub pixels (blue, red, green), share one common back lite panel thus you will never obtain TRUE blacks. While they are higher end models, LCD hit their limits pretty fast. We are just going to have to wait for Super AMOLED screens like my Samsung Galasy S. Those screens can emit TRUE blacks as each pixel emits its own light. The screen looks amazing btw as pixel can be "turned off" making it look like that part of the screen is not even on.

While looking at the new BF3 I was amazed at how natural everything looked. The bright sun light shinning on beige cream structures make for great visual pleasure. When I looked closer, I noticed it was not as detailed as Metro 2033 but it proved to be much better looking. This is why I can say, BF3 graphics look better then Metro 2033 but Metro 2033 is still more graphically advanced.

    GAME PLAY

The game play is very standard. Not much to talk about. Your character feels very big to move around and this gives a particularly off-set feeling because you characters wrist are tiny. You mind makes the association pretty fast IMO. One thing that really bothered me was having the mouse locked to the games frame rate. I hate it when games do this and on top of this, mouse smoothing and acceleration felt like it was on to. Other then that, the button layout, HUD and how your character interacts is fine.

    SOUND

I don't know if it's a sound driver issue or the actual game, but I find a lot of game actions were missing sounds or are portrayed poorly compared to your surroundings. Gun sounds are pretty mediocre along with the "monster sounds". It just felt like a lot of overlapping static (as in not dynamic) sound files playing. Microskipping seem to happen a little to often. Sound for me is a big concern, having audiophile tendencies I happen to notice sound flaws easily which really throws my mood off and really hurts the atmospheric feeling for me.

    SPECIAL NOTE

One thing that really threw me off was seeing the 4x4 buggy drive across the rugged terrain like he was driving on the flattest road you can think. No suspension flex at all! It looked so off I actual bursted off laughing wondering how the quality control guys at THQ let this be. Then again, it is THQ...

Well this is all. I'm not going to give this game a rating score because it still remains a personal opinion and varies for everyone.

Well I never got that far....

I gave up on the game halfway through as I hated the game play, and dark areas. Plus the gas mask bug (issue) got to me.

Anyway even though I wasted 40 bucks on it, I'm happy to be rid of it. Needless to say I won't be investing in the sequel.

    My two cents.

Well, personally, I enjoyed the game. No issues, well, except the graphics took a strain but I fixed by lowering the resolution. I enjoyed the game, very interesting experience, unique and different from today's FPS we normally see.

Wasn't Metro2033 among the first games with DirectX11 and that's why a mediocre-to-good FPS got so hyped?
