Are computer gamers less likely to go to university?

Are computer gamers less likely to go to university?

    By Zack Whittaker | April 8, 2011, 10:12am PDT

A University of Oxford sociological research study seems to think so, finding those who play computer games are less likely to reach university level education.

A study of 17,000 people followed since they were sixteen years old, found that those who read in their spare time, instead of played computer games, had better success at reaching higher education.

Regular video gamers who have little or no other extracurricular activities were found to have reduced chances of going to university from 24 percent to 19 percent for young males, and from 20 percent to 14 percent for young females.

Teenagers who read a book for pleasure, or visited the theatre, or engaged with at least one arts platform at least once a month, did achieve a higher probability of reaching university.

Simply put, reading books for pleasure instead of playing computer games can raise the probability of going to college.
Not what pre-college gamers probably want to hear but the results of this study don't surprise me.

Is it a bad thing not to go to college?

As I recall Gates was a college drop-out.

Graduation season is upon us, and everyone from President Obama to John Grisham is delivering commencement speeches across the country. TIME looks at some of the most successful people to never receive their sheepskins.
    Interesting list.

i wonder how much time, effort and money was spent on a 'study' to determine whether book readers were more likely to go on to further education than non-readers?

also are gamers and readers mutually exclusive? i think not...

haven't 'journalists' and 'scientists' got anything more useful to contribute?

What about those who play games and also read, like me? Do they even out each other or...?
I'm tired of so called scientists that make the most idiotic studies in the world. This is one of them. There are so many nuances to this problem, you really can't draw an accurate statistical conclusion.

The only study that really counts is this:

Just another utterly useless study the world didn't need to begin with.
Nobody in his right mind could deny the importance of reading.
But what ultimately determines if you can successfully reach your PhD is (besides the tuitions is your IQ

At least I didn't magically turn into a complete moron just because I love to play Computer games.
I have a feeling that also holds true for lots of other people.

And while you're playing on brother, pause for a second and wonder who made it possible for you to play...
