Grand Theft Auto III requires at least 12MB of available video memory.

hey all, yesterday I installed Grand Theft Auto III again because I was bored. So I tried to run the game on my laptop, but when I doubleclick the desktop icon the game tells me "Grand Theft Auto III requires at least 12MB of available video memory." and I can't start the game.

My laptop has 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and the Nvidia GeForce GT240m 1GB RAM, and also an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 (2,2 ghz).

I think with these specs my laptop should be able to run GTA III 20 times at the same time, but it moans about not having enough video RAM... My laptop can run Need for Speed Shift, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty Black Ops etc but can not run GTA III?

help me please, already updated to the latest gfx card drivers. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, service pack 1.

Since it is an older game you may need to run it in Compatibility Mode choosing XP as the OS and also requires Direct X 8.1 (not sure if Windows 7 has that version), Requirements listed here

yeah, compatability mode would be your best bet. However, some games just still won't work in Windows 7. I got Wroms Armageddon running, but games like codemaster's soldiers don't work due to some security stuff. Ford Racing 3 just gets to a loading screen as if it's frozen, so GTA3 may just not run. good luck :)

heh, I tried running as administrator in Windows XP Service Pack 3 mode before too and had no luck either.

guess it's time to format the laptop, there's a few other strange things going on with it (windows aero theme stopped working, currently using Windows Basic Theme cos I can not get the aero theme working anymore)

If you're planning on re-installing Windows then see if it works after that. I've got the Steam version of GTA III and that works perfectly fine.

Try updating all drivers on your laptop too, such as chipset.

good luck :) If you are completely wiping your internal HDd and it's large, I recommend you also install an older version of Windows if you have a disc lying around. remember, if you then want to dual boot, install the older version of windows first, then windows 7 afterwards.

I've downloaded it, back in the days I had a legal copy of GTA III but I lost the disc and serial. Not going to buy it twice.

does iTunes really have such thing? I bought my iPod Touch in february, it's a great device but so lame all great apps aren't free and iTunes is so crap... I bought the iPod with pain in my heart as I'm an Apple hater, but I needed a decent music player with WiFi and the Touch was the only decent device with WiFi so I had no choice.
