Bioshock will not start at all :(

Just downloaded bioshock and bioshock 2 from steam. bioshock 2 is still downloading but bioshock has downloaded and when I start it up it has a small bioshock logo then says bioshock has stopped working! Tryed putting the audio down from 192000hz to 44100 hz which worked for dead rising 2 and updated my graphics card but still nothing.

    Hi.
You are not the only one with this problem you are one in hundreds, bioshock has many bugs and im 99% sure is not a windows issue.
I also had the same issue (sorry i cant remember the solution right now,it was months ago)
For the moment i found this Bioshock.exe has stopped working - Microsoft Answers
    Edit:I remember 3 things
a)do not block bioshock in firewall during the installation, dont block bioshock in firewall ever.
    b)try with the compatibility mode
c)copy paste every time ur game saves in a second hard disk because bioshock very often creates corrupted/damaged saves!!
    I found also this:

    1. First, make sure that you meet the minimum hardware requirements and that you are running the latest drivers for your video card. You know, this is the basic stuff that you need to do for any game issue.
    2. Next, go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Manage Audio Devices, and select the Recording tab.
    3. Next, right click the empty space below the installed devices and check Show Disabled Devices.
    4. The Stereo Mix should appear. Right click on the icon and enable it. Then, click on OK to close the window and then close the Control Panel.
    5. Next, locate the bioshock.exe file. Mine is located here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock\Builds\Release\Bioshock.exe". Right click on it and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab and and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows Vista".
    6. To start the game, double click on the bioshock.exe file.

This is what I did and everything about Bioshock is running great.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A patch sometimes is a good solution, but as you can read here http://www.bioshockgame.com/support/ *If you purchased a digital distribution copy of BioShock (i.e. from Direct2Drive, Steam, or other), do NOT install this patch. Please go to the site you downloaded BioShock from to receive a version of this patch modified to work with your version.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If i will remember more and especially the solution i will post back.

    Is ur sound card onboard?
Do you have installed any software for the sound card?

    Hi

Bioshock on steam works fine for me. Maybe it is trying to update- steam games will do that. Not sure if but I avoid anything gfwl- I skip gfwl and never put in its code if the game uses gfwl and is a steam game. Everyone I know that has steam games and uses gfwl has troubles- I avoid gfwl and have no probs.

I have bio2 retail disc but have not tried to install it- I think it is a pretty suck game is ghetto.. They tried to pimp him with a gold chain or some crap and just the game is pretty suck imo and mp was pretty suck and was part of the reason I bought it and the retail disc game for mp. It was glitchy- sound mostly but the game worked pretty good sound would bug some cut scenes and gfwl made mp suck. After I tweaked it out it ran pretty good tho- other than gfwl sorry junk that is..

Sorry I do not know how to help- but as said- bioshock and steam works fine for me in w7 and 64bit. so it is not 99% of folks have troubles it is more likely something to do with you or your system- drivers maybe or hardware not good enough something..

Your system looks powerful enough- tho no info on your video card. I have to search another forum I post in to see what sound probs I had in bio2 and how I fixed it. Maybe it will help [that was in xp tho]- I will check it out in a bit and post back.. But I had to change something in my sound settings or the game would freeze during cut scenes..

W7 can be glitchy and will not always install dx right or physx- check your reliability history see if any install probs. Many games will install its own versions of such things- you should always say yes and let it do so..

Ok I checked it out. I had to lower sound from full acceleration to standard and fixed it. Note: such bugs can happen at any time even first start of a game- just I had no probs until later in the game. This may or not help ya- its worth a try - I am just trying to help is all..

Near half of all game probs are sound related- just folks over look it ,mostly thinking its vid card or something else. EAX in game or on in sound cards cp can cause probs too. Many game read me's and or trouble shooting talk about it and say it is best to turn it off both in game and on sound card etc. Most all creative or like cards have eax- it can be a pain in the butt..

I have only a very few friends and few of them play mp games at all. My 1 bud with bio2 on steam has never played his game to this day and got it first day out. He has like 200 steam games but has something to do with gfwl junk.

It sucks- I told him to complain louder maybe- if was me I would have a fit and maybe dog cuss folks- but steam 2k and gfwl all blame each other and it was never fixed or for him any way- the common denominator is gfwl junk tho.

Maybe one day I will install bio2 again but is retail. My fo3 goty is steam but I avoid gfwl and it runs fine other than naturally beth glitchy stuff. I have no real use for gfwl- I can care less about achievements what ever and is maybe why I have less troubles with games that use gfwl junk..

As far as bioshock on steam goes- I got the game late and well after the last patch and it always ran perfect for me no probs. Bioshock2 was another story. And best I know 2k sucks big time as far as bio2 patches go. I might not buy another 2k game because of it and how bio2 was so suck..

Any way- I hope I help a lil or you figure it out and get it going like it should and you can have some fun-

    See ya..

I have been thinking about and even pulled out my retail ut04 game and want to install bio2 again just for some mp. I love mp and playing and or beating real people but can take loss with grace. I put off because ut04 is loaded with hack cheaters and well bio2 mp with gfwl and how 2k split the community with dlc's and the have and have nots and few maps sucks.

Playing bio2 mp for a while was cool because I was ranking up fast in most of its rankings and being I play like 15 hours a day- and get better and better at fragging folks or winning. Learn the maps mostly.

But bio2 and gfwl is so laggy at times and does stupid stuff like in team play and you have to win so many matches [3x maybe] to win the game. I might be on winning team next match it kicks me to losing team then I lose- Im like what the hell was that. Game time runs like 20 minutes score or not it will start a new match and carry over score. The thing might kick ya from team you was on is stupid. Other bugs if you are daddy or you just cant move for some reason or something- its buggy. I liked bio2 mp tho- it is different and is pretty cool. Its just 2k half assed it and then gfwl is suck- maybe the worst crap for pc gaming ever made.. But is the point- ms and others on purpose try and ruin pc gaming and or mp- then add in cheaters- I barely play mp games any more.

I do like some mp games- buggy stuff or folks you have to play with ruin it. I will install both games soon tho- just to make them work with w7 if for nothing else. If I have probs I am pretty good at fixing it- so. Maybe I can learn some stuff to help others that might have probs with either games. I can enjoy ut04 just playing bots and installing new maps and recording them. I do prefer mp tho.. As for bio2 and some of my other games I am more waiting until I can buy a better vid card- so it might never be. I will get better performance with bio games if I use dx9- but bio ran fine in dx10 for me- so bio2 should too.. DX10 is a lot more hard on my vid card and lower fps more heat too..

Any way- hope you get it working..

    Thanks panais.

I did learn something in this thread. I checked my sound and turned on stereo mix. I had looked for it before- I remember it in xp but could not find it and figured w7 did not use it or something.

Ha ha now I might have sound probs- if so I can turn it off again? I had set my defaults in the realtek cp- now it is on in windows too?

    Thanks again..>

Next, right click the empty space below the installed devices and check Show Disabled Devices.
