No, you can install anytime. However I would (just in case) backup your save files -

    C:\Users\Username\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Save

    Good luck

If you get ME2 you definitely have to get the Arrival DLC.

The other DLC's are nice and I highly recommend them but the Arrival DLC is the prelude to Mass Effect 3

    Peace

Another question: Apparently I must keep Mass Effect 1 on my machine when I install Mass Effect 2, something about settings and stuff carrying over. Is this true?

    No.

What they may be saying, and it is true, is that you can import your player from ME1 to ME2. With that the actions taken in ME1 will be relfected in ME2.

You will be asked if you want to import your character from 1 to 2 when you start a new game in ME2.

At any rate you can remove ME1 if you want there after.

    1. try reinstall the game
    2. reset your computer
    3. contact the makers of the game or a support help desk
