World of Warcraft will not login

When I attempt to login into World of Warcraft the game immediately locks up. I have seen this issue with both Vista and Win 7 x64. If in windowed mode the window will close but the background music will continue to play. If in full screen, the GUI locks up and I have to invoke task manager to kill the parent process. I have also noticed that when I login, it does not matter if I submit valid credentials or not, leading me to believe the game locks well before contacting any login server.

My hardware is an HP Elitebook 8530 + 4GB RAM + Nvidia 770M. I have the game running on another HP mini tower with XP with no issues what so ever.

While the game is locked up, I check the running processes with process explorer and what I see is a number of threads activley running in the background. However, the current state reproted by PE is "wait:UserRequest". The lockup is consistent and repeatable. The parent process can be killed with no issue.

What am I missing here. I have read several posts indicating that WOW is supposed to run fine with Win 7 x64 +4GB memory.

    Looking for some advice.

Try running the repair.exe located in your wow directory first of all. Also make sure all drivers are up to date for your hardware (don't just rely on the ones supplied through windows update) and remember to install the latest version of direct x.

What about a complete removal of the game and a re-install?

Did that several times. I have been playing this game for several years now, and I am convinced there is some unique interaction with the software and either the laptop or Windows7. Are there any known issues with 64bit Windows and large memory configurations?
