Dungeon Keeper 2 in Windows 7

I know this has been done to death, but anyway...

While I'm playing the game, I'll get crashed back to the desktop about every 20-40mins, so I'm having to obsessively save.

In addition, now when I try to start the game up, I get as far as the splash screen, then the game keeps minimising throughout the Bullfrog logo video, eventually hanging.

Here is the page I originally used to get the game running. I followed all the instructions in both of the long posts, and it's still doing it. I considered the 1.73 patch but I am wary of it as I don't know if it's legit or not.

Just install the patch. It's not wrong to download en install unofficial patches. Just think about the Unofficial Oblivion patch, solved alot of bugs that still excist after a normal update. You can always try and see if it helps. If it crashes your game just reïnstall it.
Or just buy Dungeons, very nice game and plays the same as dungeon keeper 2. Got it by myself.

I don't know about unofficial patches. It's more that I'm extremely wary of downloading anything I don't know the origin of. The last thing I need on my PC is a trojan or a virus. (While I do have an antivirus installed, I'd probably end up flagging the file as non-suspicious and letting it run anyway...which if it's not legit and full of malware is only going to end badly.)

Half of the appeal is in that it's an older game and a classic, and one that I missed at the time. I'm playing back through a lot of classic titles that I missed out on as a kid. Dungeons just doesn't have the nostalgia value.

The crashing at the custscene problem seems to have spontaneously resolved itself.

I tried to install the 1.73 patch and I don't know if it's installing or not. I couldn't install it from my Downloads folder, so I moved the .exe to the Dungeon Keeper 2 folder in Program Files(x86)/Bullfrog and tried running it from there. All that happened was my screen went black for a few seconds (computer didn't hang as I was running iTunes at the time and the song kept playing) and then came back, not showing anything new open or any sort of Setup dialogue or anything. I'll try and run the game but I have a feeling it didn't install.

EDIT: Oh, now it's crashing if I try to open the Options menu, and it's still crashing every few minutes. So now I can't play the game for more than about 5 minutes at a time or save it. The menu screen still says version 1.7 so I don't know if the 1.73 patch installed or not .
