Hi all, I'm new to the forum and have a query about Doom 3 and 64-Bit Windows. Not quite a Windows 7 issue for me, but it will be after 22nd October.

I'm currently running Windows XP Pro 64 and installed Doom 3 last night after not playing it for a few years. I have patched it to version 1.3.1 but I can't get it to work properly.

It all installed fine, then runs fine, but then randomly crashes and I get my Visual Studio 2005 Debugger box pop up asking if I want to debug it. I have to then end the Doom3.exe task in Task Manager.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem with Win XP Pro 64, and if Doom 3 will work when I get my copy of Windows 7 after 22nd October that I've pre-ordered.

    Thanks.

Mine seems to run but un-windowed it blows up so that I only see the top, left 1/4 of the intro and menu. This, even after changing screen resolutions. Windowed it makes my mouse go away so I can't do anything but a three-finger salute and end the task.

Now that I've installed Windows 7 64-Bit, Doom 3 runs like a dream. Make sure you install the patch version 1.3.1 as it provides stability under Vista (and, presumably, Windows 7).

I hassled Activision tech support about Doom 3 under XP 64 and they flat out said no, it won't work.

I had to install, run 2 update patches and then run some unofficial fan patch. As for the resolution resetting, you need to patch. The early version of the game was released pretty much broken.

Or just go buy the Xbox version for cheap. and not hassle with it. Personally I think it has better controls.

I bought the game when it was first released (pre-ordered) and it ran fine without any glitches for me. But that was a while back now.

A disagree. I hate the controllers on consoles for FPS, even with the analogue joysticks and what-not. I much prefer the speed and precision of a mouse and keyboard.

Never mind, got it sorted out...
Really? Do you mind sharing how?
Sorry for the late reply... only saw this now...

Anyway, I just googled 'doom3 + patch' (or something along those lines). This led me to several gaming websites that all had a patch to download. Patches were all the same size so I assume it was the same one. Installed the game and ran the patch and voila!

I usually prefer it myself but I get annoyed when they feel a need to cram all sorts of functions in. Fire, alt fire, reload, use, run, flashlight, jump, crouch, select items, use items... keyboard design really wasn't made for gaming anyway especially when they wish to pack all those functions into one side, sometimes I feel as if I need more fingers on my left hand.

Or unbind weapon select keys and work some of them to the number keys.

I also show some annoyance when games don't seem to share a universal mouse sensitivity. One game might play just fine with default sensitivity, another might require tweaking to keep my cursor from flying around.

Console FPS titles also tend to make up for the lower precision with auto-aiming to correct so it's not a big deal. And especially with a game like Halo it might be worth investing in an Xbox to USB adapter or something. However, you do get a trade-off of faster load times on PC plus user-made mods. I'd suggest grabbing the "Classic Doom" mod for Doom 3.

    Personal preference, really.
