samurai888, welcome to the forums.
In your case it sounds like the game didn't install/update the DirectX files that it needs to run. You can get the latest DirectX update from here,

That should get the game up and running for you.
Just wanted to update anyone who may have been having the same problem as me. I ended up replacing my video card with a gtx 295 and all is well. My feeling is that even though the gtx 285 could handle the game maxed out it was getting too hot.

Really praetorian? I'm running a GTX 275 and it handles Crysis pretty well. BTW I got Crysis running a while ago and just never posted...sorry about that. I just reinstalled and deleted everything. BOOYAH
I cannot play Crysis on my computer and I have a GTX295. I suspect that there may be a problem with my video card, so I am going to RMA the card back to EVGA on Monday. I'll post back with my results when the new card arrives.
The new card seems to have done the trick. I still get the occasional drop to desktop from Crysis. Not sure of the cause. Some days, I can play Crysis all day with no problem. Other days, I get one or two drops. I have started to log the problems to see if Steam is running when I have the problem. I'm also looking at the Steam settings to see if there is an issue with the in game pop ups causing a problem
