I'm not paying more than $30 for a game, I don't think they're worth more than that. Especially certain companies. I'm a cheap ass.

As for porting games over from consoles...that's just friggen LAZY! Skyrim was ported over. What they really should have done is create separately for the PC & Console. Porting from the console is just laziness and poor planning. Skyrim's UI is a sack of garbage because their company's lazy. A modder named DarkN created a new UI for Oblivion, and from what I've read, he's making one for Skyrim. Hopefully he'll be able to. Otherwise I'm not playing it because the UI in Skyrim is an utter failure just because their company was too damn lazy to create it separately for the PC. They can give whatever "no funding" excuse they want, they did it the "easy path" instead of the "right path". They would have made more money than what they spent on it. Now it's going to bite them in the ass because their UI is a P.O.S. One guy even wrote a big thing on it, and most responses to his writing (IE: 90% of them), also thought the UI was a P.O.S.

And prices don't really have anything to do with pirating. People pirate games because they either: A: Don't want to pay anything for the game, B: Can't pay for it, or C: They download the game to test it out, and then go buy it from the source if they feel like they should. I just wait for the game to go down in price. I'm not paying $50-$60 for a game.

Peoples who are A & B don't usually care if what they're doing is illegal (depending on where you live, such as the Netherlands for instance, it's not illegal, or even if it is, I've been told they don't really care over there). Personally, I don't really give 2 sh!ts if it's illegal either, it happens, live with it. It's always going to happen, no matter what companies do. And the companies "CD check" crap doesn't really help them out either. I'm not puttin' my stupid cd in the drive every time I play, (And I own at least 30 boxes). I just create a disk image and put the disk back in its box, and it stays in there until I have to use it again. Period. It's much simpler just to use Daemon Tools, all of my disk images are in one folder in my D drive.

And Martin is correct. My pc is roughly 2 to 2 1/2 years old now, and it plays my games just fine, and I'm still using a Ge-Force GTS250 (which is quite old now). It even plays Skyrim without a problem.

Edit: I also have to agree that for the last 10 years, PC games have been roughly the same price (IE: $20-$60). If they've risen, it's probably been only recently. The games fall in price after a few weeks or a few months. I have all the time in the world for them to drop in price. (And if they don't drop, forget it, not paying $40-$60 for a game).

but what your forgetting is the pc gaming market accounts for a lot less than the games console market.

for example "mummy (or mommy lol) i want a £200 xbox for christmas"
    or "mummy/mommy i want a £1000 gaming pc" lol

The pc gaming industry is currently being killed by consoles, as they are becoming cheaper, and developers are focusing their efforts on them.

take call of duty, it grossed £550,000,000 in its first 5 days of sale, id say less than 10% was pc market. so porting becomes the answer, it keeps the less than average pc gamer happy as well as the fan boys. But the high end gamer like me that likes to be blown away by graphics and physics gets a little bit miffed. Id pay extra if i had to to get a game developed with high end pcs in mind.

That's more because the economy is total shit the last roughly 10 years. Consoles are half the price of PC's, seeing as most consoles are only $500 when they're first released, and you don't have to upgrade the parts. Which to me, is the only upside to consoles. The negatives are you can't mod games, which to me, is a big no-no.

PC Games, in all honesty, when done right, far exceed console games when it comes to gameplay and graphics. Personally, the only thing I see on the upside with consoles is you don't have to buy another one (unless it has no warranty, and it breaks, then you're S.O.L). Other than that, to me consoles are crap.

People only buy consoles over PC's is because a lot of the parents of this generation don't know diddly squat about PC's and won't mess with them unless they learn how to use it, and the fact that consoles are half (or even 3/4) the price of PC's.

I don't own a console, and I don't plan on getting one either. You can't mod games on consoles, which to me, is absolutely boring.

That's absolutely right! That's why I played the crap out of Oblivion. I could literally add hundreds of mods that didn't conflict with each other that added to the game (better landscape, more buyable houses, better grass, water, sky, weather, etc). I'm hoping we can do the same with Skyrim. If not, forget it, I won't play it. I WANT mods in my games, or it'll get boring after a while, and I won't touch it for months because of that.

Take Mass Effect 2 for instance. I played the game all the way through without mods the first time. After I beat it, I went online looking for mods, and discovered they didn't let you mod it. I uninstalled it shortly afterwords. If I can't mod a game...it's boring as a turd floatin' in a toilet bowl.

I have never made any sense to me to waste more money upgrading my PC due to the fact that what I got now can play any console port these Devs Houses want to trow at me... again, watching movie clips and cut scenes for more time than I can play the game is not my idea of fun.

Do I buy them? Yes I do... when they hit the bargain bin or they get to less than 20 bucks. I figure that's what I would spend if I were to go to the movies anyways!

I have to agree, prices are laughably too high (I, on average, only get ONE new title per year, if that, and usually only if I absolutely just can't wait, or am bored with the older games because $60 is just ridiculous) and console ports are damn lazy and buggy to high hell (I'd even go so far as to state a slap in the face for us PC gamers), couldn't agree more with that... and I imagine, by and large, are the culprit for random crashes to desktop without so much as an error message. This has happened to me twice already with Skyrim in the last two days. However, it's even worse with Oblivion and Fallout 3 for me (averaging 3 of those for every 5 hours of play), so seems to be getting better (Skyrim actually plays the best of all of my games on this system as far as performance goes - go figure)... but these issues really need to be addressed.

What ever happened to the good old days, where PC games didn't crash or glitch (at least nowhere near as much as today)? I'd like those days to come back... if anything, they could at the very least tweak the ports so they actually work without crashing to desktop so often. And I truthfully could give a crap-all about pushing the envelope on graphics (within reason of course, I don't want DOS quality back, but I don't need ultra-realistic either - to me, Oblivion and Skyrim etc. look just fine, even on Medium settings)... it's all about the story-line and a long one at that for me (Fallout 3 was mediocre IMO, because the main quest was God-awfully short - and the fact you can't continue to play after that -, as with most games these days! I got incredibly bored with it, and probably won't replay it for a couple years yet unless I just wanted to mess around killing crap).

And the difficulty in navigating the menus while using the standard 12-button controllers really miffs me, especially seeing as most are console ports. And by this, I mean having to mouse over what you want to select in the menus then click (rather than being able to effectively do it much like the console counterparts can, using the D-Pad to move the selections up or down then select with a hard-coded button) - you'll be hard-pressed to be able to get that cursor right over the selection using the joystick. That needs some definite work. For Skyrim, I abandoned the idea of ever being able to use a gamepad with the game as-is... it just doesn't work out (way too many keys to map and mouse sensitivity disparity between the game and menus for that to be feasible).

This all said, I think the best option would be for gaming companies to go completely digital download, and offer a steep discount for that considering all they are paying is the 5-20GB worth of bandwidth to host a single copy of that file on their server (which to these titan companies is nothing), meaning there aren't any shipping or production or reseller costs at all... it's something that has always miffed me, too, that they charged virtually/exactly the same for the downloads as with a physical disk, booklet and case (because again, downloaded games cost them nothing and net them almost 100% profit gain)! If they offered their downloaded games for about $25-35, more people would be able to afford them and wouldn't instead wait until they dropped down to the bargain bins or else go GOTY.

Win-win. But then this is all la-la land of a wishful thinking here. It'll never happen, and they'll all stick with the old, struggling and out-of-touch business model of gouge 'em good so long as we all keep running off to buy them, no matter the price.

And another thing, the securom and other junk they install on your system IMO is total bullshite (as well as most newer games HAVING to be activated through Steam now)! That's among the top deterrents for people to NOT just go pirate a clean game, JUST the game - not all of their little "extras" that will run invisibly on your system, hogging resources. That's actually reason No. 1 that, after I get a game, I download a torrent version and a no-cd crack to avoid all of that trash - but also cover my butt, by getting a legal key and license to use that game/software.
