Buying a Gaming Laptop - Any suggestions?

well ive never had a need for a gaming laptop, so cant suggest a specific model. i am an ASUS fan and can testify for their great build quality.

1. Any laptop with a HD screen is going to be heavy
2. Alienware would be a good choice http://www.alienware.com/Landings/laptops.aspx

If you're putting your gaming laptop on your lap, you're doing it wrong These things are basically desktop replacements, meant to be used on surfaces and plug into mains power.

I lug my gaming laptops around all the time, but since I own a car, the only time I need to actually carry them is from the desk to the car. Weight really shouldn't be a major issue... unless, I don't know, you're a student and you have to carry your laptop all around campus or something? Gaming laptops already have to compromise on things, if you're going to add weight to the limits you will have fewer choices to pick from.

I'm not familiar with those other retailers so I can only comment on Asus. They're pretty good, and I'd take one over the Alienware (which isn't bad, but it's rarely the best when considering price-vs-performance). Main thing I'd look at really is the GPU and CPU. Everything else is usually open to compromise unless far below norm.

Personally, If you are in need of mobilty, yet want a gaming PC ...

I would look toward the lower priced laptops. They should suit you fine.
Then, look toward building a nice little Mid-range Gaming desktop.

For the price you'll pay for a higher end laptop that can play some games, you could go this route and have a better gaming destop, yet still have the mobility of the laptop.

My advice would be the same as Wishmaster's.

You don't really need a gaming laptop because there really isn't such a thing. No laptop can replace the power of a desktop PC and still be easy to carry around.

I recently purchased a g74sx. One thing you need to be aware of with this laptop: it is virtually impossible to find a bag that will fit this monstrosity. I only found two bags that would fit it. The Alienware mx18 backpack, and a custom made Timbuk2 large messenger bag.

That being said, I love this laptop. I haven't done much gaming on it, I just needed the kind of power it offered while on travel. However, the games that i have thrown at it, it had no issue handling: Skyrim, SWTOR, and MW3.
