I have a problem with Xfire, in that when it starts IWindows will show me an alert popup (I think it's user access control stuff) ask me for my admin password, then it will allow Xfire to connect. If I do not 'admin' Xfire will start, but not connect.

You should try going into the properties and changing the security settings. Your other option would be to change your UAC settings to off.

and it has gone to ****ters again
even worse this time, 20 fps in middle, although im still on the new 185.85 drivers :|

it cant be because of wrong audio drivers can it? because the only thing that happened was windows update overwriting my custom pax drivers again but i reinstalled them already.
and i oc'd my comp from 2,6 to 3,6 and the gfx card a bit, but the game worked with that earlier. i mean if it was because of oc'ing i'd get graphic glitches or the pc would die but i dont get anything like that, just horrible, horrible fps.

Did you do a full clean out of the creative and pax drivers ?? I dont mean to sound condescending , its just my audio was causing me major probs both in game and out , and it wasnt til i clean ALL remnants of both nvidia and creative that it solved the problems.
then i downloaded the windows 7 drivers from creative and its been great
    Creative Worldwide Support

I havent installed the latest nvidia yet ..

And although yopu didnt have these problems prior ...it would suggest a graphics or maybe audio driver confict?

Also , if you ahvent read this "older" tweakguide , it helps TweakGuides.com - Unreal Tournament 3 Tweak Guide

Sorry , wish I could be more of a help..

    Under Windows 7 64bit I had no problems with UT3 with patch4.
Under Windows 7 RC1 32bit, I have the problem with menu's blacking out and disappearing. For me this only started after I applied patch 4. But this seems to be related to xFire, in other words I haven't noticed it yet when xFire is off. But I do notice periodic crashing. Currently I am not using compatibility mode.

I also just installed UT3 Patch 5 (released 5/4/09) but it didn't resolve the issues.

As for UT3 servers... there aren't a huge number out there, but xFire seems to find several hundred of them while Gamespy and the in game tool seem to find considerably less.

I haven't played UT3 in a long time, but recently rediscovered it as it's really cool to play with the Nvidia 3D glasses. It's all eye candy though, ie it dosen't really help you play better. But it is really awesome with this game :)

    Info people may find useful..

Honestly.... ppl here should have saved their $$$ and stuck with UT04.... just as many servers as UT3. Not as many glitches, faster and better (imo) gameplay with ut04. I was highly disappointed with UT3 just during the public beta MP test. Frame rates are terrible for last generation vid cards, which wasnt the case when UT04 came on the scene. You could still play the game with decent FPS using a 440mx 64mb card. This i know for myself, of course i then upgraded to the ati 9800, but it really wasnt warranted, just a minimal improvement, and world detail and other detail got to be on high. I myself am after the gameplay experience, not just the fancy textures and shadows, reason why i stuck with ye ole UT04. FYI, the best mod, that isnt played anymore sadly except for get-togethers, is/was Air Buccaneers. If bored, nothing to do, have a google at it. The idea for the mod was brilliant.

I really can't help ya, as I am running Nvidia based stuff. However my E8400 with4gb of ram and an 8800GT. I just install, install patches and I am good to go, never a single issue or hickup with UT3. As for lack of servers, ya I have really noticed that. However the internet LAN play is only about 25$ of the game for me. My wife and I actually play against each other in a local LAN mode. Then I do go and play offline against the computer.
