It sounds like an issue with Steam. Run a repair on the Steam installation.

Check the event logs for errors relating to application crashes. We need more information really to diagnose.

If it was me I would just take a backup and re-install Steam.

Since the games actually load up it may not work but have you tried verifying game cache for these particular games? Right click on the game in steam and click properties/local files/verify integrity of game cache.

BSODs while playing games (Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands 2)
Hi, so since last Saturday (6th September) I've been getting several BSODs almost every time I've tried playing games with my friends. On average I can play for about 20-30 minutes, I might get lucky once or twice and last for an hour, and a couple of times my pc has auto-rebooted itself after just...

IE 11 Automatically Closes After Current Security Update
As many people heard recently there was a new exploit which targeted Internet Explorer and Adobe Flash Player, Microsoft put a rush on a new security update to fix the issue. I went to Automatic Updates and it wasn't on the list so I proceeded to download it manually. I installed the security...

Portal 2 Randomly Closes
I sometimes find myself playing Portal 2, getting really into the game and then 'poof,' the game closes and I have to open it back up again. There are no error messages, event viewer shows absolutely nothing wrong, the temps are all fine and dandy (Around 70 with max settings is pretty standard),...

BSOD during games (Diablo III, Left 4 Dead 2), multiple error codes
This is a PC that was custom-built by a friend last September. Since early May I've been getting BSODs more and more frequently while playing games like Diablo III and Left 4 Dead 2. Since it's been happening during games, I suspect it could be my GPU, but I haven't had to troubleshoot much before...

Folder automatically closes after 5-10 minutes
This has been so frustrating. When I open a folder (usually a desktop folder) after maybe 5-10 minutes the desktop flashs (icons reload) and the folder closes without warning. Very annoying having to reopen time after time while I'm working with the contents in the folder. I have tried virus scans,...
