Help with allocating more memory to Minecraft

I have 4GB of RAM and it uses maybe half a gig. I use an extensive amount of mods and I know that it'll lag the game and cause it to crash. After doing some research I've seen some people allocating more memory to minecraft by creating a .bat file and inserting this coding (assuming I am using the correct words. Feel free to correct me):

    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar "C:\Users\Adrian\Desktop\Minecraft.exe"

When i run it, I can only get it to run up to 1524. anything further and it says in CMD:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

Any suggestions with course of action I can take to give it more memory? I'd like to get up to 2.5GB because of how much memory Minecraft likes to snack on.

The reason you can't allocate more RAM to your server then 1524 is because Minecraft servers on a 32bit machine can only process up to 1.5G's of RAM. Any more then that would just give you errors. I suggest upgrading to 64bit.

But in my personal experience if you are playing in SP mods shouldn't give you much lag. Especially if it had 1.5 gigs allocated to it. SP doesn't cause much FPS lag with mods, it's SMP that you gotta worry about.

    Good luck friend
    Hope this helps :)

I have 4 gig ram installed in a Compac with an AMD 64 processor. Gamejunky is lucky. Since my old faithful 2 core intel died I cant even play minecraft. I get an error that (choose which one you want) Nvidia is using more memory than it can support, The hmouse is using up memory, JAVA is corrupt and needs replacing. Because of the way that this mB is made I can load a single chip into either socket. I now have 4 gig single speed memory chip in socket 2 because socket 1 will not work.
I power up, allow the system to go through its test, load the necessary programs. I then immediately have to dump the system setup files and clean the disk for me to even be able to type a word. Recently, the system was taken down offline for about 5 hours while I tested another system for repair. The system worked for about 8 hours without a memory glitch. Thinking it might be fixed I allowed it to remain plugged in and connected to the intranet. Next morning, back to same old, same old. I cant figure this out. my son has an identical machine that stays online 24-7 and never has the problem with memory leaks. I am ready to go back to my old AMD and XP Pro.

Use OptiFine - [1.2.5] OptiFine HD_C6 (FPS Boost, HD Textures, AA, AF and much more) - Minecraft Forum for FPS issues.

What program is giving the error? Minecraft?

Can I recommend a help channel on an IRC server that is extremely helpful? They have helped me many times and most probably can help you as well. Would it be against the rules of the forum to do so?

Get an irc client, (or go to mibbit.com) and get on esper.net (irc.esper.net)

    Go to the channel #minecrafthelp

The people there are beyond awesome at fixing even the hardest problems concerning Minecraft.
