Windows 7: xbox controller for pc use on the game Rage, how to?

Hi, I am trying to use an xbox controller to play RAGE on my pc, but even when I select the gamepad for use it does not work. Yet, the xbox controller buttons are displayed for the mouse, eg A instead of E for interaction.
I am probably missing something really obvious, but I am not terribly pc literate.
What should I do to use the gamepad?

Did you try the drivers for it from here? The driver from windows update never worked well for me

Try updating the drivers.

If this does not work go download xpadder at www.xpadder.com

This should be able to "lay over" the actual in game addon for the controller itself.

Also when and if you do download xpadder you'll be able to pick what button does what as you have to set it up that way.

Xpadder is not hard to set up and I've used it many-a-time with emulators so-on and so-forth.
