Windows 7: Left 4 Dead DirectX crash

Just my bad luck - first CoD4 crashes with DirectX error and now Left 4 Dead does that too (those are unrelated problems as far as I can tell, but still)



Anyways, straight to the point: I get "Failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer" error right after intro movie starts. So far none of the solutions I found thanks to google worked so I was wondering if any of you nice people seen that problem. Or even better - solution.

Made me sad when two of my favourite games refused to work in freshly installed system

OK, so I solved it finally. Nvidia drivers were the culprit, I had Forceware 190.38 from windows update, found newer ones on nvidia download - 190.62 WHQL. Exactly same problem on both. I went back to 185.85 and both games seem to work now.

im glad you were able to work around your issue, and there may very well be a bug with L4D and the new nVidia drivers. but being that it is necessary to keep your drivers up to date, your fix, may also cause problems later on, with other programs.

Yeah, tried every launch mode that could be relevant, none helped Did some registry tricks for memory management that I found on steam forums, did not help either, directx was already updated to latest, disabled all apps that could be interfering etc. Actually downgrading graphics drivers was my last attempt, final resort you can say. From what I gathered there are some significant changes in 190.x series drivers architecture, probably the cause of the problem.

it's possible that these newer drivers are geared more toward the 2xx cards. as they will probably replace the 8 & 9 series, pretty soon (too soon imo). i run the game on the 190.xx driver, but i game on XP (faster for me) ... hopefully they have a legitimate fix for this, i've read of such errors related to 8 & 9 series gpus recently.
