PS3 Connection

I have recently upgraded my own PC, and used some components to u/g my youngest grandson's machine, in the form of my Hannspree 19" monitor, a Core 2 6600, a Gigabyte ATI 5450 card and a RAM upgrade. His PC is Win XP and is part of a (2x PC and 1x laptop) wireless network. Signals are all full strength from the TP-Link 300 Mbps Router, with a compatible TP-L Range extender.

He also has a 60GB PS3 and plays games on both, ( I have never had much interest in Gaming, but appreciate that computing is a broad church!)The games on his PC are low-level and do not overstretch his 5450. The monitor is 4 years old but has worked perfectly for me in all that time, and still does when connected to his PC in DVI.

However, it does not have a HD output to the PS3 socket, so I bought a DVI --> HDMI converter, but the monitor reports "No Signal". I really would like to set up his PS3 in HD mode, what are we doing wrong or missing here please?

EDIT: just realised that I have not checked to see if he has tried to connect the Converter to monitor via PC, in HDMI.

Thanks for the input, I actually contacted Hannspree's website and emailed for their advice. My message was sent to them at 16:23 and the response came back at 16:56. Not only was that the fastest online reply I have ever experienced, you will see that it is very informative and goes farther than my request. Here is the response: -

Dear Hannspree customer,

thank you for choosing Hannspree products.

The DVI port of this model is not HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) compliant. HDCP is obligatory for HDMI content. If the PS3 is used as a BluRayPlayer the picture will not be displayed. We are not sure about using games.

At the time when this monitor was imported the presence of HDCP encryption might have caused a TV classification by the EU customs authorities. TVs are charged at 14% import duty - unaffordable for IT products with the permanent price pressure.

Fortunately this procedure was changed and now most of the DVI-Inputs of current models feature HDCP encryption.

If the product shows a picture you can select the resolution of your choice that provides the best picture performance. 1440x900 would be optimal. However we are not sure if PS3 supports such resolution.

This tells me that we might not be able to receive HDMI, but also exactly why. HDCP, which is once again the music/video/movie industry fat cats stopping a perfectly reasonable activity in case they may lose a few dollars.
