    Increasing VRAM?

    I currently have the Geforce 8600 GT 256mb <<(i think that's the VRAM not sure tho)

    i can't run crysis on medium without lag....

    my friend has a GeForce 8600 GT 1GB and can run crysis on High without any lag, and yes i have been to his house and personally played on his computer it is true! Don't tell me I'm lying i checked everything.

    Sooo, i can easily buy the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB but is it worth it? will it really make it so i can play crysis atleast on MEDIUM without lag on a low resolution like 1280x800 or even less. It's only $50 so even if i see a slight difference i would still buy it.

    Thanks (sorry for my noobyness)

    Yes his card would make a substantial difference. other things to consider are your interenet connection vs his, you cpu and ram vs his. If all other things are equal and its on ly $50 difference its well worth it

    why buy a really old card like the 8600?

    save up a bit longer for a better card, and play on high detail at full 1400x900.

    +1 buy a new card. at least in the early 9 series, with at least 512MB
    a GeForce 9500GT w/ 1GB will only cost you ~$50-60. it's cheap, yet it will last a little while longer. 8XXX cards are pretty well dead, as far as support. unless it's an 8800GTX-OC-WTFBOOM. which a lot more expensive.

    The difference between them is likely more then compatibilty, I'm not a guru with hardware or anything but I know that the difference is a lot more then that. Think of it this way;

    8xxx was made way back when?
    9xxx is more recent and has more recent technology implemented into it.

    Though when you say interested in the card what do you mean? I have a desktop that could use a card. =P

    I GB ram on a 8600GT is like putting lipstick on a pig, looks good but doesn't mean anything. That card isn't powerful enough to take advantage of it, and is hampered even more by the 128 bit memory bus.

    I am with the others, save up and get a better card. You're also going to have to save up for a new power supply unless you replaced the 300W one that came in your Gateway, as it would likely fall over dead if you tried to put anything more on it.
