Windows 7: Going from DiRT 3 all the way to Colin McRae Rally 2005

Going from DiRT 3 all the way to Colin McRae Rally 2005

Hey everyone. Just wanted to share this because I'm sure there must be some people here who understand the jolt you can feel when you go back in time a few generations after you've already been exposed to the latest and greatest games that a developer has to offer that pushes today's hardware to its limits.

Anyway, I just recently purchased DiRT 3, and overall I think it's terrific. I'm a big fan of the franchise, and I've been playing it since the very first version of DiRT. But along the way I've read many times the praise that people have for the older Colin McRae games, so since I saw that Amazon had Colin McRae Rally 2005 for sale at a cheap price, I decided to pick it up.

But the funny thing is, I don't think I like it, for three main reasons:

1. I don't like the way the vehicles feel and the controls. It feels like there's a very loose connection between the car I'm driving and my controller, and it doesn't feel very responsive to me. Or maybe it's too sensitive because the game is probably running at 250 frames per second -- I don't really know.

2. I don't think I like the tracks, at least based on what I've seen so far when I started the career mode. At times it can be really hard to see where you're going, there are some nasty unexpected twists and turns that are hard to prepare for in advance, and the rear bumper camera angle (that I usually like to use in racing games because I like it the most) is such that the car obstructs your view too much, in my opinion.

3. I don't see any easy way to abort a race and start over if you make a mistake or feel you can do better. Sure, you can exit or "retire," but that's not the same thing.

I'm not knocking the game because of its graphics; in this area, I felt the game was fine. Sure, it was 2005 graphics and kind of pales in comparison to DiRT 2 and DiRT 3, but I expected that.

Anyone else here a big fan of the older Colin McRae series and can offer some insight? Do you agree or disagree, and can you give me any tips that might help me enjoy the game more?

All I can say for sure is, it sure is interesting when you get done playing a 2011 game (in Eyefinity) and then you launch one that is six or seven years older that only uses a single monitor.
