No settings save in Heroes of Newerth and DOTA 2

My son recently started having problems with his HON and DOTA 2

For HON, when the game starts it goes full screen. He changes to Windowed mode and plays the game, next time he plays it it starts up full screen again.

With DOTA, it complains that his client is out of date when in game.

He has tried uninstalling, reinstalling, removing files to force the to repatch

    Problems persist.

Any one have any idea what might be causing this?

His system spec is almost exactly the same as minem, except he has a EVGA 570 SC video card.

    thanks

Could an antivirus program be stopping HoN from saving the settings file, and dota 2 from patching? I know some A/V programs (like BitDefender) can affect some games.

Yes, this would seem a worthwhile thing to check.

    Indeed, we have tried that.

It seems that the HON problem was due to a disconnected drive. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems that a WIndows update released within the last 6 - 8 weeks has made the persistent nature of mapped drives worse than it used to be. Both my sons have been caught out with this problem with HON, Sims3, various steam games. The workaround is to ensure the connection has been restored before starting the game. There seems to be no "real" fix to maintain the drives persistency.

However, the DOTA problem has not been resolved. We have created a support ticket with steam, but they typically take 3 - 4 days to respond, if at all. So if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be interested....

Well Dota 2 is still in beta so it could be the game itself not being compatible with your system (yet). Maybe you can download manual patches from mirror sites? or you can even try downloading dota 2 completely from other people (via torrents maybe?) and see if it works from them :\. You can also try compatibility mode and see if it works with that, although the chances are very small, due to it being a very new game.

We figured this out a while ago, but I forgot all about this thread.

Since the PC points to a network drive for the personal drive, which was disconnected, the game couldn't save the settigns etc.

The kids know to make sure the drives are not disconnected now.

Haven't found a robust way of keeping them active/alive without adding extra software.. but it's not a major hassle.
