Reports of the pirate-defeating glitch surfaced on the official Eidos forums (via Kotaku), with one user posting about a particular problem he was having in the game and which he believed to be a bug.

"I've got a problem when it's time to use Batman's glide in the game," said user Cheshirec_The_Cat, whose appalling spelling we felt we needed to clean up. "When I hold [the button], like it says, to jump from one platform to another, Batman tries to open his wings again and again instead of gliding. So he falls down in the poison gas. Can somebody could tell me, what I should do there?"

Of course, suspicions were immediately aroused - the PC version of the game isn't out yet, after all. Eidos were quick to hone in on him, revealing that it was a deliberate glitch built into the game as an anti-piracy measure.

"The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free, said the Eidos admin.

"It's not a bug in the game's code, it's a bug in your moral code."

haha. serves em right. this isn't exactly new. a few other companies employ these measures, e/g EA games (Mirrors Edge had a "bug" like that too). what the real kicker is, when someone 'acquirers' such games, and if they have a bandwidth cap, they loose like 7GB for nothing.

While I don't condone piracy I still see these measures as a lost cause. I will be the first to admit that every game I have ever bought was pirated first. Regardless of how you feel about that I have my reasons... This being one of them: it might be true that there is a demo for said game but this demo normally incorporates the best the game has to offer and gives you a false "wanting" of the game. When you go to buy it and find out that it is rather awful...your now out $59.99. That has happened to me to many times and as a consumer I am taking a questionable but very secure route to protect my investment but insure that the developers that make games I like will be rewarded. If developers insist on making the buy of their game "no return" than I will continue to try first...buy second

I can see that. I feel your pain. My Number One has quite a few XBox 360 and PS2 and PSP games that just suck.

When he was 5, he finished Curious George in about 2 hours. At least that one only cost $40.

Also, why do I have to pay full price to replace a damaged disc?

Whatever. We have more fun bowling, swimming, playing ball, golfing, shooting pool, biking, hiking, pranking, running, skating, skateboarding, mentos rockets, water balloons.

I am getting way too old for this.

i've just downloaded braid through steam, for £3.39 (= $5.66)!!!

if only all games were priced so well...

then i would spend even less time in the 'real' world.

Buy it. :P

GTA IV has similar anti-piracy measures - when driving your car it will randomly accelerate, some of the in-game computers don't work, etc.
