Games Lagging with Direct X Update

Hello,

I've been playing PC games on my new laptop for a few months now, all of which can run on Direct X 11. Two games, Saints Row the Third and Civilizations V I run using Direct X 9 mode, which helps me keep my laptop temperature down.

Recently, however, I have bought and downloaded a few games via Steam that are older, that only use Direct X 9.0c. When I run any of these games for the first time, Steam will start "installing Direct X...". After that, all of my games run with very noticeable lag. I will lose FPS (going from 70+ to about 20-) every 20 seconds or so. If I perform a system restore to the moment before Steam installed the Direct X, everything starts running fine again.

Does anyone know why this is happening or how I could fix this? This has rendered half of my games on Steam unplayable because they all need to install Direct X before playing. The only topic I could find with a similar problem to mine was an unanswered thread here: link .

I'm running a 3610QM core, GT 650m graphics, and 8 GB RAM.

I will give that a try, but I'm not sure of how it will work. I've tried using the installer for Direct X (the one that's 286 KB or so) and it's always told me that my Direct X is up to date, etc.

Well I ran the file listed in the link and it downloaded what seems like every update for Direct X in the past 5 years or so. I'll have to sort it out to see which I should run.

I've tried updating my drivers but the nVidia website says that there are no new drivers for my GT 650m. I'm tempted to try some of the beta drivers, but I'm not sure how risky that is.

Well it's not the older game that's causing the lag, it's the Direct X installation that Steam performs while starting the older games that ends up lagging my new games.

Who is the one having a problem? you have asked for help but you are unwilling to try (more so for a free advice that won't cost you a penny?) and it won't cost you much time to do. Do you know for a fact that IT WON'T help?

All I'm saying is... take the free advice, waste the 10 mins of unharmful time this will take. Besides, its not like doing will hurt any of the games or the laptop in any way!

Already did that before I came here. I was clarifying that it's the newer games that end up lagging, rather than the older ones.

Although, looking at the passage you quoted, I mistyped. I meant to say, it's not the older games suffering from the lag, it's the newer ones.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I'm thankful for any replies that I receive.
