Poor gaming performance and cant figure out why

So I recently got into gaming on my pc by adding a new NVIDIA GeForce GT 520, the only problem is I still seem to be having performance issues with any game I play. Currently i have a AMD Atholon II x4 635 processor at 2.90 GHz, 4 gigs of ram, 500 gig hdd, running on windows 7 home premium 64 bit, Everything I have tried doesn't seem to help my performance, if you need more information let me know and i will do my best to provide it.

well the games doesn't appear to be heavy . . . So the lag can be caused ( in my opinion ) by either faulty hard disk or windows .....
open task manager and click on performance tab and look if the resources are being over used ??

Try updating your drivers if you haven't or reinstalling them

Windows Experience Index isn't a good benchmark, don't look at it.

Lag in games is probably caused by your GT 520, which is a low-range GPU. Don't expect high fps in modern games...
Try to lower graphics and maybe set a low resolution... this will increase fps in games.

An hard disk wouldn't slow games so much, but you can try to defrag it.
also try to clean up your pc with programs like CCleaner.

And, as M1GU31 said, try to update drivers. If you already have 301.42WHQL version, downgrade it. It is currently causing a lot of issues with a lot of games... Maybe this could be the problem.

What resolution are you currently using in desktop and in games?

if hard disk has a problem it gives continuous skips / jumps in games my personal experience
