I recently purchased a new desktop pc which I bought primarily for gaming, but no matter what I play the game lags, I've updated my drivers and searched the internet for answers, only to have failed. its getting very annoying now.

    any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks

What do you mean by lag? Typically this is when you're playing online and the movement is very choppy. So are you talking about online gaming or something like an offline campaign mode that's giving you trouble?

Are you sure you're plugged into the video card and not the onboard graphics?

It's always a relief when it turns out to be an easy fix! The Z68 boards will have onboard plus an optional card. I actually built a PC for my dad last summer that has pretty much the same specs as yours. One cool thing you can set up with the Z68s is GPU switching. Basically you leave the video cable plugged into the video card but it will switch to using the onboard graphics when appropriate to save power and in cases where the onboard is actually faster.

Have a look at this: GIGABYTE Z68 Series Motherboards

Also, if you're just plugging in to your GTX for the first time, don't forget to stop by Nvidia's site and get yourself a copy of the latest driver. They usually release a new one every month or two and the cool thing is that they recently started including an update notifier so you no longer have to keep checking the site for updates.

Best of luck with the new rig!
