Tried that. Doesn't affect my direct draw error although it did fix a separate error I had earlier. I've got some other ideas i'm trying though so I'll update if I find a solution.

solved: forced directx 7.0 and the correct resolution with -dxlevel 70 -w in the app target and that fixed it.

thanks for the help zidane. Would have been messing around with crappy ubuntu and WINE now if I hadn't been pointed towards dx version issues.

    d2 direct draw

hey dude, if this is still an issue:
you should set up 256 colors not for diablo II.exe, but for Game.exe. And run the game via game.exe. Also, there's neither need for compatibility mode nor run as admin mode.
there are some color glitches in game menus, but the game itself runs fine
it works fine for me, try
also, if this doesn't help - u may try glide wrapper: http://www.svenswrapper.de/english/index.html

Try 3DFX download and try Glidewrapper Glide2x for Geforce 2MX+/Radeon 8700+ it emu for older 3DFX games like descent 3 and quake it has a max res of 2048x1600 it uses 12MB ram for 3D and has other tweaks remember to limit Vsync and use 60HZ since its defult is 75Hz

and it works better than all the ones i have used its just install and select res and setting's and it works and has a tweak for all 3dfx games so it runs with only a game you select

basically, there are several issues at play here. One is that the maximum resolution supported by diablo is lower than some displays can show. Therefore, trying to fullscreen as is default will cause diablo to crash.

You can get around this by getting diablo to run windowed. Do this by rightclicking the diablo shortcut, clicking on properties and adding -w at the end of the text in the target line.

You might also need to force a certain level of directx. You can do this by also adding -dxlevel 70 in the same line.

Also try the glide wrapper linked by Ubeogesh and apollodominion. It didnt work for me because of issues with my display but lots of people swear by it.

I just wanted to report that adding -w in the shortcut to Diablo II worked perfectly for me. I didn't quite get around to the DirectX library and forcing it. It's Windowed Mode and with an option setting, 800x600.

I have my own personal solution

I turned my desktop resolution down to 1280 x 720 and game fires up every time. Any higher and it gets code 22 error.

This is discussed in this thread: How do you get Diablo 2 in full screen mode?
