That's the error I get after trying to start either single player or multiplayer. Running as an admin and have tried in compatibility mode for everything down to Windows XP SP2. \

This computer is running an Intel Core 2 6600 with 2gb RAM and an 8800 GTS.

After a fresh install of the OS and running Windows Update, I install COD4. When I run it, the splash screen displays then it goes black like it's loading into the game. Then it crashes--don't remember the error. However, I fixed this by simply reading the forums and discovering "plugging in my mic" and it worked. Walaa.

Next. I can restart, still works. Then I start up a game of C&C Generals, installed by TFD--it crashes giving me the error listed above immediately after start, with the splash screen. It doesn't even switch to the black screen like it did without the mic.

    Any ideas?

I had to install DirectX 9c runtimes on my fresh install of W7 x64 because CoD4:MW & CoD:WaW (and other DirectX 9 games) were crashing or wouldn't even start

even with DirectX 11 installed by W7 it seems you still need some 9c runtimes for those "old" games to run properly

I have had no problems with any DirectX 9 games since installing the 9c runtimes
