    Possible Gaming Rig?

Would this be a ok Medium-High end gaming rig?

    - Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz
    - 8GB RAM + 1TB HDD
    - DVD Writer
    - NVIDIA GeForce GTX650
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    - 500 watts

It is a pre built machine, and i was thinking about adding in the ssd from my machine and another hard drive, and a 650w power supply.

Hello A5 mate if you can go an i5 I think you would be better off - depends a lot on the board.

I have that same card in my Ivy Bridge and it is basic but good but I don't game either. For your PSU I don't think you can go past the Corsair HX 650 if you have the budget.

Good idea to add the SSD for the OS and boot from - make sure you prepare it right with this first SSD Alignment :)

i have a cooler master gx 650 in my current machine, so was gonna be using that.

i also have a 6870 in my machine too would that be a worthwhile to put in as well to replace the 650

Well the Coolermaster is ok mate but just how old is it - on looking it has a five year warranty so I would be keeping that in mind and also giving it a good blow out before installing it but DO NOT try to disassemble it unless you know what you are doing they are very dangerous devices to be worked on unless you are qualified or aware of the dangers!!?

The graphics I really am not that well up on but a quick look at the specs says the 6870 is ok and probably a bit better than the 650. I have a mate on the forum I'll get to look at the thread he will advise you better than me.
But in any case that 6870 if it were mine I would look at refurbishing it - at least redoing the thermal compound if you are ok at doing that sort of thing. :)

As far as I recall, my 7770 beats the 650, and the 6870 is faster and overall better than the 7770, so I would stay with the 6870 and overclock it, however.. I do not trust any PSU that calls itself a ''gaming psu'' even from a popular brand. But if it works in your current system, I see no reason not to keep using it.

I agree on getting an i5 over an i3.

Thanks Erick I am no expert on the GPU's the PSU though I have the HX 650 in my Sandy Bridge and it's 12v rail is actually 630 watts actual and would be more than enough I would reckon.:)

The i5 it is worth considering the i5 3470 minimum and if you can run to it the i5 3570K - get the K because it is only a few dollars more than the base model and I made the mistake of getting the i5 2500 instead of the i5 2500K for my Sandy Bridge - just to save a few dollars and thinking I would never need it :)

I have the i5 3750K in my Ivy Bridge right now and it is just the ducks nuts

The PSU seems to be a decent one and I would also use the 6870. I think you'll have a low-medium game machine even if you upgrade to the i5 CPU.

    Thanks for the replys.

I will stick with my gx 650 as its only six months old, and 6870 then. as for the cpu the pc would be bought pre built on a finance plan due to financial difficulties lol. So an i5 upgrade would more than likely be out the question.... for now

Never mind A5 when you are ready help is always at hand here and as long as the socket is 1155 the upgrade will be easy. Then you will need to also look at the cooling set up mate as the stock ones are pretty ordinary, and there are some good ones that don't cost the earth.

But one thing that is free is this what I refer to as the Bible and if you don't mind losing some of the "bling' - Optimize Windows 7
