If you don't have a wireless adapter for your xbox 360, you can connect your 360 to a computer via an Ethernet cable that is connected wireless (e.g. A laptop). Then share the wireless adapters internet connection with other devices via network and sharing center.

If your router supports more than one Ethernet connection, you can use an Ethernet cable to connect your xbox 360 to the router that connects to the modem for internet. If you do not have a router, then you will have to connect your xbox directly to the modem unless you have an available Ethernet slot on your computer to share the internet connection with.

How old is your Xbox 360? The newer models all have integrated wifi and you don't need the adapter anymore. If it's an older model, then yes you do need an adapter.

You shouldn't need to use a computer to setup Xbox Live over wifi or a wired connection. All you really need is your network password for a wifi connection.

Do you have it set for Wifi or wired connection? Check the network options area of your Xbox dashboard and make sure it's set correctly. If it's set for wifi it should detect any available networks automatically and all you should need to do is select your network and input your password.

It should select wifi or wired automatically, but check to make sure it's set properly anyway.

For a wired connection all you should need to do is plug in one end to your modem or router in an open port and the other end into your Xbox 360. Wired connections usually don't require password authentication and should be simply plug and play.
