There are many versions of backgammon that one can play. It would help us to help you if you would post a link to where we could get the version that you are working with. Until then, I'll just guess at some things:

Perhaps the app has not exited correctly and therefore, will not start again. Check Task Manager to see if it is already running on those times that you cannot get it to start (again?). Of course, if this happens right after you booted the computer, then the scenario mentioned above is not the problem.

What happens if you disable the network adapter (so that you are not connected to the internet), then restart the computer and try to open the app? The app might be starting, but not creating a window for you to see (yet). Maybe it just hangs when it cannot talk to the servers. Disabling the network adapter should simulate that.

In other words, can you tell me how I might install a copy of the same software that you are using so that I can do some testing to see if I can find the problem?

If you do not know how to disable your network adapter, then I'll test this for you if you will help me locate the software that you are using to play this game.

    Okay - so I...
...enabled Windows Games via Turn Windows Features on or off
...started Games Explorer via the Start menu
...setup the explorer using the default options
    ...started Internet Backgammon
The game gave me a window (or an error message if there was no network connection); so that rules out you not getting a window because you cannot communicate with the servers at times. What I did not test is: any interaction between your AVG software and this game.

I started the game several times by right clicking on the game's shortcut and selecting Play. I ended the game and tried to start it again. I repeated this several times and once those steps yielded what you mentioned: no window after selecting Play. But that only happened because the game had not completely ended yet. The game's window was not showing, but the app was still running (according to Task Manager > Process list). So, keep Task Manager running and check to see if the app is still in RAM if it fails to make a window for you. Perhaps the game hung while exiting and never properly left RAM.
