I have done all I could to fix this - from reinstalling MS Visual Studio 2008 to entering this command - bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff to turn off Data Error Protection - and am totally frustrated. I don't know what else I can do.

The NTStatus error indicates that a invalid parameter was passed to a C Runtime function call.

I would suggest you get your friend to review their code, sometimes bugs will only appear once the program is actually running in a real environment.
