hi Jeckena, welcome to the forum!

    a few questions:
is your sound card working elsewhere?
have you played Bioshock previously on that same machine, but in a different OS?

it sounds like the game isn't recognizing that you have a sound card installed...

I am having the same problem with BioShock. I am running Windows 7 and Bioshock through Steam. I have the menu sounds and also the movie sounds but in game there is no sound what so ever. BioShock ran fine on the same machine running Windows XP. I even tried running steam in compatibility mode in Win XP SP2. Still no luck. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very appreciative.

after lots of trial and error, i finally managed to get Bioshock running in 7000 32bit. i had to run the installer in Vista compatibility, otherwise it got confused by DX11. then i actually had to install DX9 from the DVD (!) otherwise i just got a blank screen. finally, i had to run the game in XP compatibility mode, otherwise i got no sound during the game.

so now it works, but i often get artifacts on the screen during play which i never saw on XP
I don't know if you figured this out yet or not, but all you have to do is run Microsoft DirectX® End-User Runtime to fix W7 up for gaming!
After I installed the Runtime ALL my games played just fine!
It installs all versions of DirectX & the games will use what they need.

I have Bioshock running in DX10 on W7 build 7000! Same with Crysis.

    Bioshock on windows 7 Works

I know it sounds weird, but after changing bioshock exe to work in compatibility mode with windows 2000, everthing just went fine, even with that crap patch 1.1 from 2k. the game is running well and isnt crashing anymore, hope that will help! ( lol)

    Still not working

I've got Windows 7 64bit, all other games except for Bioshock have been working.

Like everybody else, the menu and movies have sound but not the game. I tried that End-User Runtime thing, the DLL hack, the compatibility thing, the compatibility registry hack - literally everything.

Still nothing, I'm wondering if users in my position that posted earlier have gotten theirs working.

It worked great for me from day one of the rtm even in x64
It must be a hardware problem not an os problem

Ill try to reinstall it again, how long do you have to play before a crash?

works fine for me too on my x64 - didn't have to do anything special to make it work.

only problem is lack of anti-aliasing (but that's the game's engine!)

*edit* there's something in the sea.

    never crashes

It doesn't crash, plays right through - but with no sound.

I can't really reinstall a steam game, but I might try to reinstall my sound driver. Every other game works fine, though. Even other games by 2K work.

My bioshock is the retail version so I really cant help to much with the trouble shooting of it under steam.
