Should I install DirectX 9 for Call of Duty 4 on Windows 7?

Hi. I'm trying to install an older game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, on Win7 x64 Home Ultimate, which has DirectX 11, but the game requires DX9.0c. I'm worried that if I install it, it will wipe out the later DX version and cause problems. What is recommended in this situation? Thanks.

Yes, you can install it. You will still have the DX 11 version too. You will have no problems.

+ 1, The required installation of DX9 for any game will not destroy your DX11, it will simple add a few files necessary for the game to play smoothly, if you don't, your game will not start or have issues... to bad they don't explain this because lots of issues could be solved by it.

I would suggest to install DX 9.0, as this is required for sound in some of the old games. If you do not have DX 9, some of the old or new games might not have sound in them. As already mentioned above, your DX version will remain 11. So go for it.

Doesn't the game itself contain the necessary DX files you need? I don't think I have ever downloaded any dx from microsoft for any game and my games run fine. Am I missing something important now, or?

Usually they do. Steam for instance will install the additional files needed for games. Some installers do not. When it doesn't, then a manual install of the legacy DX files is needed.

That is exactly right, but as the OP initially mentioned

We are, in no way, stating that you must download the whole DX9 from Microsoft and install it against or in conjunction to your DX11, we are simply saying... you must install everything your game requires, be it DX9 or C++ as it won't harm anything you have installed now.
