Right mouse button on the "Play Battlefield 2142 online now" icon, select property's and at 'target' fill in the following line.

    "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +playNow 1 +menu 1 +fulllscreen 1 +widescreen 1

    é voila!

Try installing the XP Virtual Machie for Windows 7 RC(I'm using 32 bit). . I just installed it on mine and the install worked flawlessly for 2142. I'll update later if the game is working or not! Here's a link to the instructions for installing XPVM. I didn't do anything with my BIOS, but I did check to see if the my processor was compatible.

Okay I've got a similar problem. I've installed BF2142 using THE administrator login. I've also installed Punkbuster itself and updated the client for that. I've installed all the latest drivers for everything and I've got a gamer's lounge router giving me priority for all the ports associated with any battlefield game.

    The problem -
The game starts fine but will argue over connecting to the master server to log me in.
I can get past this stage but then it argues over displaying the list of servers available.
Again I can get past that stage too but then I get in game, it lasts a few seconds and then freezes, I get returned to the BFHQ screen and it says I've lost connection.

Oddly enough I dropped to desktop immediately at one instance of this happening and found that windows itself claimed it had lost my network/ internet connection. Now I sit right below the router and the cable modem. All the wires are trapped in place and secured, all the lights on the router and modem are active whilst my computer reckons it's lost it's connection. So what's gone wrong?

    Anyone?

Xander a few things to make sure of, one make sure you have the latest firmware on your router. Also check to see if BF2142 is allowed to pass threw your windows firewall and that you have the latest BF2142 patch.
And make sure you have the latest driver for you nic and windows to up to date with windows update.

Thanks for the rapid response DX. As far as I'm aware the router is up to date (I believe D-Link has discontinued support and there's been no updates in a long while) but I'm not so sure about the NIC. Wouldn't that also be updated with the router firmware as they're both on the same device? Wouldn't any malfunction in the router have affected play when I was on Vista/ XP (the router is quite old).

As for battlefield itself, patched to 1.5 and includes northern strike all patched in the full admin account.

I'm just worried that this seems to point to an internal change to the Windows architecture and with BF1943 on the horizon I don't want to find out that the best OS doesn't support the best game (though I would admit that I usually find EVERY problem out there!!).

    Thanks again though.

You can also get the server IP number and do a ping and trace route to see if the server drops you there, if it doesn't drop with a ping/trace route then we know its the game and something is stopping it.

Thanks again DK. I'm working on the assumption that it's either an incorrect configuration or a problem within the game - OS communication as it seems to happen regardless of which server I try to connect to.

I'll let you know if I find out anything more though.

Edit - Okay so I go back to trying to get the game to work with a similar result to last time, a while of play before disconnection. Then I check out the various compatibility options for the game. If I tick the box for compatability mode (I figured that as it was designed for XP that should help right?) and it loses the disk. So I tried something different.

One time when I switched to desktop I noted that Windows 7 disabled it's desktop visual scheme stating that a program running was incompatible so I thought I'd tick the box for disabling Visual schemes and desktop composition (no idea what that is at present but it seemed pertinent). Whaddya know, it seems to work. I played on an empty server until my ammo was depleted and then played on a full server for several minutes with no problems.

I hope to be checking out how well this fix works more later this evening but I figured I'd pass on the success to all those still trying.

So install using the proper administrators account (not just any account with admin rights), do the same with punkbuster and update battlefield's client and then set the game up to run with admin privileges and also so that it disables the desktop integration and visual schemes.

    Hope it works for others.

Okay so I just tried to get the game to start in 1920x1200 resolution, no joy.

Modifying the video.con just results in it displaying in a default resolution (ie tiny) and trying the shortcut route just lead to three crashes before the walker intro movie even appears.

Oh and it comes with this error report
    Problem signature:

    Edit -
This reminds me of an old problem when BF2142 first got released when you had to download the SDK of Directx. I'm not sure if this is the same kind of thing... anyone know?
