Hardware:
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula x48
Videocard: Asus Nvidia 9800GTX+
CPU: Intel Q9550
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066MHz
Problem:
I installed Crysis after a clean install a couple months ago since I finally have some time to myself this weekend. The install took an incredibly long time for some reason and once I click on the 'play' button it locked up my desktop. Ran compatibility mode and still no luck. I uninstalled all the programs that the video card came with (Asus SmartDoctor and GamerOSD) and still no luck. Installed Warcraft 3 with no luck. Installed Battlefield 2142 and it works with no problems. Installed Spore and no luck.
Other Stuff
I tried to update Crysis with the latest patch but it does not install because after it verifies it does nothing. I have yet to install the Battlefield 2142 1.50 patch because it is 600MB.
I tried 3DMark06 and it works for benchmarking my computer.
Edit: Also uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials and still does not work.
Edit Again: Running in safe mode will freeze up too.

Format the drive, reinstalled everything and everything is working. I still haven't found what has caused the problem even going through the steps I did when I first installed everything over the past month.

Fingers crossed that whatever was causing your issue has gone for good. otherwise, random freezing can sometimes point to a h/ware error, especially if you are freezing in safe mode.
