    Angry? I'm FURIOUS

So I expected Windows 7 to be revolutionary, for both every day tasks and gaming. I've heard about miraculous boosts in FPS for people running W7 as opposed to vista, 3 FPS to 30 FPS.

I, on the other hand, have never used such a terrible operating system for gaming. Vista benefited me in many more ways.

I'm not running on some out dated machine.

    AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition ( 4 CPU's ) @ 3.2GHz
    ASUS M4N82 Deluxe
    8GB DDR2 4x2GB @ 800MHz
    2x nVidia GeForce GTX 275 896MB GDDR3 2-way SLI
    1TB Hitachi HDD
    2x 24" LG W2452TX @ 1920 by 1200

With Vista it ran crysis DX10, full screen and everything maxed out with an average of 40 FPS. Now I'm getting 28.

    Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
    W7: 28 FPS
    Vista: 70+

    Mirrors Edge:
    w7: 40-50
    Vista: 60+

I am pissed beyond belief. I can't enjoy games if I can see stutter. I bought this machine so I could run games with a beastly frame rate, and know I can splash out on all the new release games without worrying about a thing. W7 has put this worry back into my mind.

I've tried running in compatibility mode. I've tried updating my drivers. I've tried closing all of my applications and ending processes that I don't need. I've even tried disabling my second monitor while I play.

Nothing. It's still a pile of crap and frankly, unplayable.

Is there anything I can do to make w7 run games better? I don't want to switch back to Vista because it'd mean a fresh install. Backing up is a pain and w7 had the upgrade option so I didn't have to worry about that.

Your problems are likely to be from the upgrade install. Upgrading has been known to cause issues. Personal preference would be to back up and clean install win7. Its worth it.

Wow...with those differences, it looks like it must be a driver issue...and/or perhaps SLI not being utilized. Hard to believe the OS could adversely affect performance to that degree otherwise.

You may have a warp drive machiine but if the networking isnt set up correctly you are going to have stutter and lower frame rates. Suspect you are running homegroup and IPv6. Change to workgroup and disable IPv6 then retest.

With my pile of C***P machine the frame rates are up 10-20% over vista

Scubasteve? As in Scubastever from PM?

Edit: SLI is enabled. I actually have to run Steam in compatibility mode for Counter-Strike Source to run without crashing.

    @swarfega:

Are you 100% on that? I'd rather not back up everything, spend hours doing a fresh install then have the same problem. It's lightning fast for everything else, which is why I want to keep it. What I was thinking was partitioning my HDD and having vista on it, so I can just reboot to game ( my boot up time is literally 20 seconds, so it doesn't bother me at all. )

Yes, it is definitely advisable to do a clean install rather than an upgrade.

I understand this, but what if it doesn't fix it? I appreciate your help but I'd rather a 100% definite YES that I wont have the same problem.

We can't give you a definite answer. All we know is that you are having problems, and doing an upgrade can sometimes cause problems. If someone knew exactly what the problem was, and could give an exact solution, they would have given it already. One person mentioned it could be a driver issue. Another mentioned it could have to do with your networking settings. You decide: is it worth your time to back up and do a clean install, or are you okay with this terrible performance you are getting?

Drivers have always been an issue after a new OS release. The manufacturers and their programming staffs are racing to get Win7 drivers released! Have a little patience, this is a great OS and many ppl have seen great increase in fps and gaming performance when using win7 compliant drivers!

Skype: If you have an old HDD laying around try the clean install to that first!
