I don't like FRAPS that much, I have the trial version, and tried to use it on L4D2, my FPS went from 55-60 to <20 when I hit the record button.
Maybe the full version is better, but I was still disappointed.

I don't own Left for Dead, but it is a source built game which should have the record demo feature. If your just recording LFD and not a broad rage of games I would give the record demo a try. The record function doesn't record the video but records just the data in which you would play back in the source demo player. From the player you can render it to an .avi file.

Extra Tip: Rendering out in the resolution you want depends on your LFD game settings. So play how you want it when recording and then when you want to render the demo crank up all your game settings. If you want to render in a resolution higher then your monitor uses, change the game to window mode and then run the demo player.

My opinion is that actually FRAPS IS the best... thought for some reason it messed up my mouse sensativaty and I couldn't aim at all... Now I found a great recorder called Play Claw. It takes very few fps from the game and still maintains good quality. Also ZD game recorder is one of my faves.

Xfire is pretty decent, you just don't get that much control over it. But they do make uploading to their site very easy... just hope you have a some what decent internet connection.
