it is your graphics chipeset. it's just not powerful enough
No one thought to ask but..are you running any mods at all? Have you also completely removed the game...reinstalled it and immediately installed the latest patch from Bethesda?
...and Frostmourne is correct about how buggy the game is...I love Oblivion with a passion but I can't deny that it is one of the buggiest games I have ever played
I hate to disagree; but it doesn't need that powerful graphics chip. I run Oblivion on a vmware box.
The game is just full of bugs. BTW - Nice link to Oldblivion, I hadn't heard of it before.
@kmakar - if you upload your saved game, I'll see if it crashes at the same spot for me. If it doesn't crash, I'll save as soon as the sewers screen loads. Sometimes just getting there will fix it for next time.
I tried to upload the file for my saved game here and I got an invalid file type error. what should I do?
Here is the save file. See what you can do with it =)
I just downloaded it and will check it tonight for you. If I can get past the spot where it crashes I'll save it and upload. At least this way we'll know of the problem is:
- A glitch, meaning that it will probably work for you from now on.
- A localised issue (hardware on the installation):)
- A corrupt save file (which could also mean the above I guess)
I'll let you know anyway.
By the way, I have he PAL Australian GOTY release, so fingers crossed that your saved files give me no problems. :)

All tested!
The news is that it works perfectly on my system and it was quite fun to do the first part again. :)
This is a worry, because it does point towards installation or hardware issues on your PC.
Anyway....
I played and went through the game:
* Followed the guards
* Got told to wait with the Emporer
* He was killed and gave me the Amulet (not quite in that order )
* I had to pick my class or something and choose barbarian becuase they are better for hack and slash (i.e. the sewers) and you can change it right before you leave again if you want.
* I went off to find my way into the sewers
* Found my way in
* Killed some rats and goblins
* found my way out
I also saved along the way. One of the saves is right before you exit the sewers so that you have a chance to change your class, sign etc.
If it still crashes on you when you leave then let me know what class etc you want and I'll set it up and exit for you.
Given my success, my feel is that the problem is in your installation (but my fingers are crossed for you!).
- Have you downloaded all of the patches?
- If you have a spare copy of XP, you could always dual boot or install VMware like I did (the game quality as as shown in my pics)

i'm not sure my installation is the problem, as before I even posted on this forum I installed, had problems, uninstalled, and then reinstalled. I am not new to this game- I have beat it 3 different times on 3 different platforms. This game has never not worked for me. I just enjoy playing it and wanted to install it on my new computer that I got as a gift- now i'm thinking I want my old computer back =( I cannot install XP on this computer, as the hardware is too new and it will only go one generation back- to Vista. Meh. Every time it crashes I get "Oblivion has stopped working" and when I open up the task menu it says "Oblivion not responding". No shit. The version of Oblivion I have is the latest, and I don't think there are any later patches, at least that's what I can gather from the Bethesda site.
Thank you all for trying to help me. I will look into getting a better video card, I guess- I just hope that is the problem otherwise I will spend a lot of money for nothing.
