Both versions of windows are MINE! They are both on the same computer and I can only run one at a time.
Now in response to your question about licensing..........D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F. ??

After all I've done to help make brother Bill a Billionaire, over the past thirty years, I'll play what I want, where I want and when I want and I seriously doubt that the FBI or any of the ABC boys will be knocking at my door.
So please don't bring up licensing to me again. OK?

Go Dr go.. Top man.
Actually I don't mind the new Solitaire. It also runs fine on my old PC. [Athlon X2 4200 2GB ram, Win7 x64.]

A mate has problems running it though on a much faster machine. [i7 920, 8GB ram, Win7 x64]. It's slow to deal and, sometimes loses sound. I'm looking into this as it's the Win7 games on faster machines that seem to be affected. Strange how the same game on the same op sys, can behave so differently!

When I first moved from Vista to Win7, I gritted my teeth when I found no Win Mail. I pinched it from my old Vista instal and made it work in 7 just like your trying to do with this game. It was a bit of bother to do however, and in the finish I found I was more than happy with Win Live Mail. Just remember the old XP vers is 32bit and, on Win7 x64 it'll have to run via WOW (Program Files (x86)).

Good luck.

Windows 7

I found this thread just because I HATE the new Sol and wanted to see if I was the only one or not! I tend to be a pretty flexible guy and understand that our technologies need to evolve to stay relevant, so I cut them some slack. I could end up liking or being neutral to most of what's new, except for two glaring issues which needlessly slow down play by a lot...

- Right-click stacking shortcut! It used to be a right-click from anywhere on the screen was a shortcut to send all eligible cards onto the home stacks! (How smart and functional!) Now this only works if you're on an eligible card or hovering in empty space. Otherwise, it acts like a left-click... But I've got a dedicated left-mouse button, why would I ever want the right-mouse button just to act like a 2nd left-mouse button? If I'm running through the pile and flip up a stackable card, I now have to leave the pile with my cursor just so I can use the shortcut...

- Too much resolution! They've made cards slightly smaller, which is not a big deal, but the space between them has grown exponentially! 480,000 pixels of resolutions, but there's only 13 cardspaces in the game! I used to be able to zip around the screen very quickly with the mouse depositing cards where they needed to go with precision, but also with speed. Now with smaller cards and bigger voids you have to drag measurably further onto a pile before the action will assign to the correct pile.

While these both might seem like minor grievances, keep in mind, it's an insanely simple game, with very little depth. That means the focus is on getting the little things right! For me the whole point of playing, is to get a little 1-3 minutes distraction while I'm thinking about or procrastinating on some work. Without adding anything beneficial, they've slowed the game down by 1/3 - 1/2 for me.

So when I first loaded Windows 7 (true also with Vista) I found that MS had actually paid some guy to mess it up the look and feel of Solitaire (expletives deleted).
It looks really sick and doesn't even play the same as the older version.
So, not to be daunted.....

I set about finding a way to play my old familiar Sol on Windows 7.
After many false starts and having to run System Restore a few times to fix my screw-ups, I finally got it!

From the System32 folder in XP, copy the Sol.exe and cards.dll files to some external media, like a flash drive.

In Windows 7, 32 in the \Program Files\ folder, or in Windows 7,64 in the \Program files (x86)\ folder, make a new folder and call it something like "Old Sol".
Then from your flash drive copy the two saved Solitaire files to the new folder.
Right click on the Sol.exe file and "Send To: Desktop and create a shortcut".

Now, you'll have a shortcut on your desktop that will run the old familiar Solitaire (Sol).

If you're happy with the new Solitaire, then just forget everything I've said here.

Cheers Mates!

Systems 1 and 2: Windows 7 Enterprise x64, Win 8 Developer

I actually had to google ".D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.". Although I figured the last three on my own. I must be suffering from cerebral bulimia.

Windows Home 7

OK - I completely agree about the new Spider Solitaire. It actually hurts my eyes to play it whereas before, I found it relaxing. So I get what you're saying to do but I paid some guy a whole lot of money today to take down my XP computer and replace it with a new one running windows 7. Hwo can I do this fix if I can no longer access the 2 files I need? Is there somewhere on line I can download them?

Win 7 solitaire is flawed

In general, every time I see the word "improve" or "upgrade" I shudder, because no matter what, it makes things worse. Every time. Mainly I want to holler, "Please, don't help me." More and more, MS Win takes over, depletes our control over what we're doing. Solitaire is just one example. Let me decide, esp. End of the Game! Besides, about every tenth play I know the game is over, done, kaput, but the program just keeps highlighting the deck. One disclaimer, I greatly admire the programming minds that develop these software delights, but in my own Neanderthal programming experience debugging is a never-ending Herculean trial. Disclaimer #2, I tend to get wordy, so sorry.

Ciao for now
