    Cannot open/install sims 3

Right yesterday i bought this game & since then i have been trying to solve this problem, i got home put the game into my laptop (2 week old dell inspiron with windows 7) & the usual window didn't pop up like it has with all of the other disks i have put in my laptop (including other dvd's). I then went in to open it manually but it is not recognising a disk. Firstly i know it is not that there is a problem with my laptop as all other disks work on it & secondly it cannot be the actual disc & i have actaully returned 2 thinking that they were faulty, i am now on my 3rd. I have looked at forum after forum & tried all of the relevent suggestions but i don't seem to be getting anywhere. I am about to throw the lot out of the window , so any help would be much appreciated. sorry if ive rambled

Hmm... this is really strange. It's not showing up in My Computer? And all other discs are recognized except Sims 3? And you're on your third replacement disc from the store?

The only thing I can think is that you need to update DirectX. Try that here: Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime

It might be that the disc is seperating, if you look at the underside of the DvD and it lookes like a weird design where there shouldnt be anything your disc is probably seperating my husband says it looks like a ghostly image either way it does not look normal. I purchased the Sims 3 collector's edition from our local Best Buy and had to return 11 of them before I found a good disc. when EA manufactured these games they used very poor quality discs, I even preorded Sims 3: High End Loft Stuff from EA hoping that that would make a difference and it didnt I recieved the disc and it was seperating. We are new to Windows 7 we were having issues getting two games to run, we were able to install but they would not play. Most likely your disc is faulty. Look at the shiny side compared to a disc you know works and see if you notice anything unusaul. I hope this helps. To fix my issue I just upgraded my video drivers, but it doesnt sound like that is your issue. If the disc isnt working and you havent exceeded your warrany time from the store you purchased it from, take it back until you find a disc that works. The Sims 3 is windows 7 compatible.

Thanks for your help, redfoxtrystman! That sucks about the separating discs.

iloveyrmum, if that's indeed what's happening (and if DX update doesn't help) then I would recommend taking your Dell laptop into the store with you to save time. Install it right there when they give you the disc, and don't leave until you get one that works!

I recommend trying to get your money back and try downloading it legally from a website, they allow you to download a iso which you can burn or mount.

I installed Sims 3 2 days ago and it runs without a hitch. The Game seems to be even better/more responsive than under Vista (what I had when Sims 3 came out )
What version of S3 do you have and what error message did you get ?
Did you start the installation as admin?
I understand that sometimes the Antivirus can block an installation while the DVD tries to install some form of DRM. So you could try to disconnect from the net, shut down your AntiVirus and start the Setup as administrator.

If it's just your average reading error, try to copy the DVD to some Temp directory and install from there.
