Which Version is best for gaming

Well, am aseembling a new rig and am at the point of installing an OS, and I was merely wondering which windows seven os would be best. I know x64 is the only way to go, but should I get ultimate, pro, or home premium. and is it really with the extra cast?

See this post: Compare Windows 7 Editions

You probably don't need anything higher than Home Premium, in my opinion.

Personally, I use some features that only Professional and above have, like hosting a Remote Desktop session.

I'd say stick to Home Premium, unless you need features it doesn't have.

Hello wiredsoul,

I would not go any further than professional but if you would like to see a comparison chart here is the link

From my personal experience I am happy with windows 7 home premium but if you expect to run XP programs then you will want to go with Professional.

'but if you expect to run XP programs' ... I am I right in saying "other than games" to that?

Well in all honesty if you want to play games just stick with Home premium 64x because if you start heading into professional and Ultimate your maintaining a business XP mode allows you to run older xp programs.

Professional and Ultimate have what is called XP Mode, which is a virtual XP machine.

If you had any games that absolutely refused to run 7, you could install them in your XP machine.

Home premium; is good enough to use for any gaming pc, it doesnt require ultimate etc...

and my home premium has XP mode, letting games run in xp service packs etc.. no need for vitual xp on win 7

There is a difference between XP Mode and compatibility mode for XP.

See this tutorial: Compatibility Mode

Also see here: Download Windows XP Mode

To the OP: I recommend Home Premium.

Well, I went with home premium, and it's worked out better good so far, slight compatability issue with a few programs, but nothing to really bother me, so thanks for the advice, and home premium is working just fine.
